Try listening to the Cryptopsy cover of it. As terrible as the cover is, the guitars are slightly more audible, although are sometimes drowned out by badly produced and un-necessarily loud drums.

Not all death metal is like Cryptopsy. Personally i think bands like Death, Arch Enemy, At the Gates, Children of Bodom, and several other death metal bands are much better and the production is alot clearer (mostly)

You've a pretty broad definition of death metal with that list. You covered a lot of sub-genres there, not a single one actual death metal except for Death which only falls into it by legacy alone, and by today's standards would be somewhere completely different... you know, if they didn't help found the scene and all. Children of Bodom...? What are you smoking? Are we even talking about the same thing?

If you want to talk straight up death metal then ya, it IS like Cryptopsy. Just about any Cryptopsy fan will tell you Flo Mounier's battery is what keeps them all coming back for more... he is the star and will always be jacked up in the mix. I will admit the production on their Oh My Fucking God wasn't the greatest, but I say that about everything but the drums. They were spot on. Mind you every Cryptopsy release has varied significantly in production, I guess it just depends what year it was really.

My point (although admittedly wasn't well defined) was to show that there were several different types of death metal. Death's earlier stuff is more traditional death metal, like early Morbid Angel and Possessed. Arch Enemy and At the Gates are swedish death metal and bands like Soilwork (early), In Flames, Dark Tranquility, and YES Children of Bodom, are melodic death metal. Then you've got stuff like Cryptopsy and Cannibal Corpse which are more brutal death metal (although Cryptopsy from what i've heard seems more technical). Like you said, there are alot of sub-genres.

Let's not get into subgenring, no-one can win that :D
For example, I'd personally rate CoB as power metal.

But really, it's no point discussing these labels, because they're different for every person and every band has elements of every subgenre. It's not quite black-and-white.

Very true. Although when it comes to genring metal i get very anal. hahaha

There are 2 tabs for it on there. I guess just try to piece parts together that sound right and if they dont try to figure that part out by ear, thats what I do...
