So...I got a new laptop and I tried to record on it to discover it has what I have dubbed "The Latency from hell". There is about a half a second delay when I record. It is making it virtually impossible to record a song. I was wondering if an external audio card will fix this issue? I'm pretty sure it will, I just want to make sure before I buy one. Also, does anyone have any recommendations for one that is under 200?

A good interface around 200 Euro's/Dollars is going to be pretty difficult. Try some secondhand shops or eBay.
M-Audio will do the track, not TOO expensive.

I use M-Audio Audiophile 2496 (internal though) and it works great, pretty cheap too. Dev's been using Focusrite, right? I've read good things about the Saffire.

200 dollars, sorry about that. And I am not looking for anything extremely high end, just something that will let me record without latency.

I'd go for a nice M-Audio interface than. The Audiophile and Firewire Solo cards are around 200 dollars and record without any latency.
I hope you have a firewire port, because I can really recommend connecting interfaces through firewire.

You could try asio4all drivers as a workaround, they work probably on anything that has audio input jack. But it's a cheapskate solution, having 200 spare bucks to spend on soundcard sounds better

Indeed. Focusrite has some great transparent sounding gear. Especially the higher end products.

I don't know the Saffire mentioned earlier but it looked interesting for people getting into recording. What I did hear about it was some issues with drivers when it came to compatibility. So it would be good to look into that before buying. Well, this goes for anything computer-related of course.
