you sacrafice alittle crunch for that subsonic roar. I mean, fair trade. I think alot of people look at that low end like it is a bad thing. Just means that their minds are closed off to the theory of "More = More". Look how much larger of a range you now have with an 8. Not only can you still play a high e, but now a dropped c as well. That is beyond 1 octave alones range, how sick! I agree with sweeps & scales part. You put thick enough strings on that bad boy, lessen the gain alittle, maybe add a bit more compression, you'd have some super sick tight sweeps going on up there.
I feel that amps have gotten better over the last ten years completely! Refered to was a dual rectifier, which was actually changed back in 96' believe, at least from origianl design, a 5150 which I believe is now out of production & a jcm 800, which in my own opinion, without a master volume mod is crap to begin wth.
Just look at all the new beauties we have now at our finger tips amp wise. We have the diezel herbet, bogner uberschall & ecstacy, we have several new mesa models suc as the stiletto, the road king, etc..., just alot of really good stuff out there right now. Stuff that allows us to still be metal when we are with the boys & shred a Nevermore or SYL lick or two, but that also allow us to switch channels or tubes & shred some michael bolton riffage in the privacy of our own homes later ;) (Time love & tenderness bitches)
I think rather than closing our mind to the theory of low end subsonicness, we should just embrace it as the coming of a new age. All hail & fuck yo couch nigga.

one word: meshuggah. I have no idea of how the achieve that crunch and so little mud, but they do.

Well to be fair, they don't crunch. If you listen to their newer stuff there's relatively rare use of chords or powerchords of any kind, it's mostly single string playing to keep it somewhat comprehensible... Of course, they're one of the few bands that use that style of playing well, but still. It's more of a sharp twang really.

It's called "Djent", and actually 3 or 4 note power chords are part of the recipe, along with single notes on the low F/F#. Also low input gain, and lots of distortion are integral. 'I' is probably the best example of how to get the low F to sound absolutely punchy. Reminds me of the 'City' album a bit.
