Any high performance laptop + probably a firewire audio interface and a midi controller would probably be ok. Are you planning on using this for recording as well?

When you say performance, are you meaning in terms of as a basis for your soft synths/real time sample triggering etc?

For purpose built machines (though a little pricey) check out:

Otherwise, you're probably best of with a decent regular pc supplier, novatech are pretty good in all the time I've dealt with them, but I'm sure there are plenty of other comparable places around

I use an Apple Macintosh Powerbook G4 1.25 GHz with 1 GB DDR SDRAM.
My sound device is a MOTU 828 Firewire and the software is Digital Performer 4.52.
Sometimes I use also Propellerhead Resaon 3.0.

For triggering I use an Alesis D4 brain with 2 Roland RT-7K (for triggering my bass drums) and two Yamaha TP65 pads (for percussions sounds)

It's an expensive setup, but I can assure you that it works GREAT.

I need the laptop for some very complex stuff, my friend and I are seriously organising a circuit bending orientated, wall of sound type of band, just working things out. I'm thinking of running the toys through a sequencer on the laptop, as well as letting it handle other duties such as effects.

I'm needing something that can take care of very many instruments at once and also handle different presets for about three mics, with enough sound quality to make it sound good.

Sorry for the amateur description, just started diving into this music with the summer holidays.

My setup should work good.
I will post some photos as soon as I can.

we use a laptop or PC (when we're bothered) for guitar effects, loops, bass effects, vocal effects etc.

I hope to one day have a rack mounted server so I can do all the things I really want to.
