I need help and I figured there must be some guitar nuts and wizards about the place!
Getting slightly with just playing the guitar standard.
I have a Peavey Valve King.
However, I would really like some juicy effects.

What do you geezers think to Multi-Effects Pedals/Processors? (I did have in mind Digitech RP500, Line6 Floor Pod...)
Yay/ Nay? If Yay, then which ones, if Nay, then what alternatives?

Out of personal experience I'd recommend the Line 6 POD X3 Live. Or if you can afford it the Fractal Axe FX.

Alucard's right. Man, if you can afford it....Fractal all the way. Some day I will go that route.

Otherwise, for the un-rich/priveleged/endorsed...Rocktron is great all over the board as far as effects and such. I'm not a big fan of their tones though....at least for rhythm. I use a Chameleon (for effects), and the effects are pristine...the cab sim is great too. Otherwise, yeah....Line 6 caters to that shit also.

fuck that digital shit. its all about analog. it will always sound better. especially with valve amps. digital makes them sound boring because a digital tone is the norm

look for stomp boxes that are dedicated to one certain effect. theyre the best option always. electro-harmonix, mxr, boss (the japanese ones) and the rare old korg stompboxes are my favourites.

when youre buying guitar pedals, try and make sure that theyre true bypass as well to make your signal as clear and crisp as possible

I'm currently very satisfied with my Digitech RP1000, although I might start looking for a decent harmonizer pedal in the future.

Or delve into the mystical world of rack-building.

This is true also. But, it depends on your approach. If you are into post rock, indie stuff...and love the vintage gear, of course a bunch of pedals is awesome. Those styles are all about the most raw tones. But, spacier futuristic sounds work best with digital, no? It's like comparing Ziltoid and Ki. Ki would be the style for the pedals, Ziltoid would be all digital...

However, if you are broke...a shitload of pedals is hard to attain. Also, if you are a convenience freak...they take up tons of space. Digital is better for that, as they are all in one space...but then, the INCONVENIENCE there is that you have to program the shit. LOL...I guess you lose/win either way.

I love both approaches.

Separate pedals all the way. I admit that digital is getting so good that in many cases it's not possible to distinguish from the analog version.

The big difference is in philosophy. Having separate devices for everything means that you have to carefully think about what you're doing, and choose each pedal separately, evaluate where to put it in the chain, and how it should affect the sound.

In the digital world it's too easy: "well I'll just copy and paste this chain from here, and oh this sounds odd so I'll fix it with some EQ here and here and combine three reverbs for that warmth."

With effects, less is more.

Looking at it from a cost stand point, going all analog is absolutely retarded unless you have a massive amount of money to blow. Especially if you want to record with it. What with needing microphones, mic pre's, mic stands, an effective area to record said amps without disturbing people. Digital will always be the way to go for home recording my friend. I think Acle, Bulb, Keith Merrow, and many others will tell you that digital is just damn fine for home recording

Now for a live setting a full rig is definitely the way to go, unless you're Meshuggah and just plug 3 Line 6 Vetta II's into the PA.

Having one digital box which plugs into the mains beats all hell out of juggling 9v batteries as one fades and working out which patch lead is crackling and all that schlemozzle. That's an aspect of the 80's I do not miss at all.

To add to this, I will probably eventually build up a nice amount of analog pedals. But I just want something convenient, simple, but brilliant to mess around with. We all start somewhere!

Then you want a POD. Dev himself said he used the XT Live (the old one) with the Treadplate amp model and the Screamer stomp box

I'd say POD. Yes, it's true, that you can't replace that analogue sound with digital, but probably for the purposes you want, and the other conveniences it offers, it's got to be a POD
