I've basically been saying this for years.

Plus they need to write an actual song for once. Quit showing off that they can play their instruments and write a song.

They can write sooooongs... give 'em a break

I dont really care if some of their songs are "showing off that they can play"? - its awesome to see live.
(Plus i don't agree, i think they're writing fine songs)

What about this big Tech-Death popularity wave thats coming about? Suddenly everybody seems to be falling in love with it - and only few bands can pull it off

It bores me. You could say exactly the same about them -"Stop showing off you can play a superfast sweep one second, and then the next a chugging headbangy riff, and then the next some dissonant crazy panning weirdness - all in a time signature of 23/32!!!!"

(Over exagerrated obviously - I do have more respect for them than it may seem)

Sure some of the ideas they come up with are good - the occasional riff that is unique, inventive and executed well, but there are too many that seem to just be "tech" for the sake of it.

I just find it so much easier to write an Overtech-Death song than a song that can hold a certain mood throughout despite changes in the song. You can just open up Guitar Pro and go crazy, making one weird idea after the next, maybe bringing back a riff from earlier on every now and again...

I dunno, im crap at writing out arguments :D

Plus im not really aiming this at anyone, because i dont even know if you agree with all i just said, yet still dont really like DT.

Ne'ermind, ignore me

most technical music nowadays lacks any real feeling. if you wanna hear great technical music, throw away the dream theater album and buy a jazz album.

I listen to some jazz on soma.fm/sonic universe radio from time to time. You can hear some really impressive pretentious wankery there sometimes, stuff like "lets play something, but let's avoid any melodic bits or else people will think we're UNSOPHISTICATED". In case of one particular song I spent whole few minutes of listening on wondering if they can play instruments at all.

Best April Fools prank this year. Am enjoying this happier, more playful Trent.

BTW NIN non-festival dates just got added too. Heineken Hall in Amsterdam...August 8ty.

Haha, at least those bands can keep my attention. They dont have vocals as annoying as DT's (though some are pretty annoying)

Check out Within the Ruins and Veil of Maya for good techy stuff that just sounds different than everyone else.

I think im just someone who prefers long songs, that each have their own moods n things
Or even whole albums - Catch 33 is awesome, being one big song

But i have friends who listen to bands kind of, purely by the music going on, and if a section isn't 100% never heard before from anyone else, or if they dont change in too long, they get bored

Those two bands, i like musically... have some cool ideas/riffs and all, but i dont really like the vocals. They remind me too much of Deathcore/Metalcore

They bring back memories of when i went to see Behemoth and Suicide Silence were supporting, and the 'mosh pits' were...hmmm *shakes head*
