It's where all the major technological advances are achieved. Plus, you know, the future of the species. I, for one, could live in a slightly less gluttonous lifestyle if it meant that humans weren't going to go extinct. But you know, we need that massive defense budget.

I totally agree - and not just technological advances, but medical research and advances are achieved as well. And I truly think that our obsessiveness with defense against members of our own species on our own planet is what is fucking us - there most likely is life somewhere out there, but they are probably ignoring us completely because we cannot get it together as a planet. I know I would think humans were totally pathetic and primitive if I were from another world. Sorry, hope this made some sense...just starting my first cup of coffee.
