Actually the sexagecimal number system is a very sensible thing, since 60 is divisible by 60, 30, 20, 15, 12, 10, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. The Babylonians knew this and used it for their calculations. Then the Arabs came 'round and thought "but I only have 10 fingers" so they scaled down to the decimal system as we know it today.
