We had someone look at the spare room in our houseshare last night. Bare in mind he knew we had the final say on whether he could move in.

The first couple of minutes were fine, well he was overly energetic and annoying but funny. Then he launched into a tirade about how

Had a job interview two weeks ago, and they called my referee last week. Spoke to her about it today and she gave me a really glowing reference (I know she's not bullshitting me as she's given me an awesome reference before AND re-hired me last year).

If I get this job we'll be leaving Canberra. Excited, but sad, but excited.

Good luck to you!

A couple of teenagers stopped me on the way home today and asked me if I could by drinks for them.
I remembered what it was like at that age, so I smiled sweetly and said "No."

Ah, the joys of being an adult.

Ha, I haven't been asked to buy cigarettes or booze for years. I must just look like I'll say no.

So, this paleo diet thing. I'm sure some of you are into it. Care to share your experiences?

I'm looking at altering my diet to better control a medical condition. Given paleo's premise of eliminating the majority of foods that cause irritation / allergies, I'm considering adopting some of its principles. Some of the science sounds less than convincingly researched (particularly regarding cooked legumes) but as I said, I'm not looking to go "full paleo".

I also met a couple of people at work on the weekend who are into the whole crossfit / paleo lifestyle. Sounds way too intense and time-intensive, but I do like the idea of crossfit training if you have the time and energy.

Anyway, I would love to hear how anyone finds life eating like a caveman.

Cheers.

One of my sisters has been doing it for a few weeks now. She feels like a junkie for chocolate, but is so far soldiering through it.

As for myself, I don't think I could go full paleo either. Still, I admire its principles, and have cut back on carbs; now if only my psyche would allow me to shun unnecessary sweets, that would be great.

Well hello there. I've been on a liberal paleo diet for nearly 3 years. :P (liberal, as I eat legumes and dairy products among other things)
I think paleo diets, like most diets (both the sensible and batshit ones) promise a biiit to much. So, as in any case, it's good to take a sceptical approach to it.

Having said that though, it pretty much changed my life. All though I started eating this way because I wanted to fix some hormonal stuff, which may or may not have worked, I lost a great deal of weight without any effort besides cooking _everything_ from scratch. I feel more energetic, less hungry, less cravings (due to a stable blood sugar I imagine) ...and most of all, I've become somewhat of a hobby cook. Then there are all the psychosocial aspects of losing more than a quarter of my weight. It's been pretty rewarding. I suppose the downside is that I have to plan a lot, especially for social events. But that depends how much of a full-time-caveman you are aiming to be.
As I don't know the specifics of your medical condition, I don't know whether this is relevant. But that's my experience anyway.

...I could go on forever. I'm sorry if this sounds like a cheesy advertisement. Feel free to ask more specific questions. :P

Regards, caveman Faffy

ARGH I DELETED MY ENTIRE REPLY! :chain:

Ok, here's a MUCH shorter version.

Thanks for your replies, guys!

I have Meniere's Disease affecting my right ear , so I have tinnitus, hearing loss and vertigo. Had it for years now. It sucks and there's no cure, but I have done a really poor job of managing it and can only blame myself for that.

I've had a really bad run of vertigo, plus I generally feel shitty physically, so I'm cutting out everything that could be messing with my system for a month and then, depending on how I'm doing I may reintroduce one or two things like dairy and see how my system responds. So I won't be going full paleo (full retard?) :P but it closely aligns with a lot of what I need to do so I will be following quite a few of the paleo principles. Even bought coconut flour! :? I also need to drop a lot of sodium, alcohol and caffeine. Which means cured meats, my beloved wine and coffee need to go. This is going to be so difficult, I can't imagine. I think I may have to hang on to the occasional serve of sauerkraut to get some probiotics. Oh, and I also need to have stable insulin levels as that can bring on symptoms if it fluctuates too much. So, smaller and more frequent meals, and more balanced meals also.

I'd be keen to know if you can recommend any good websites. And do you take any supplements? Hapy for you to PM me or FB message me if you prefer. Any helpful tips from any one else would be welcomed too. :D

Completely unrelated:

I was having lunch with my girlfriend at a cafe today, when I needed to use the toilet, as you do.
As I left the toilet (which was unisex), I saw a pretty young woman who was outside waiting, who asked if she could have the toilet key, which I provided.
Making my way back to the table I suddenly thought: "Sorry lady, but you have to smell my poop." It was all I could do not to laugh like a hyena.

That sucks. :? I don't know anyone with that condition who do paleo eating. But I have a few friends doing it for various other reasons: One friend of mine, who has a lot of food intolerances, has been eating paleo combined with intermittent fasting for years. Like most people she reports feeling more energetic, and more balanced and that she can think clearer. Which is remarkable, considering she was pretty much a genius in the first place. This other girl I know has chronic fatigue syndrome. All though paleo eating has cannot cure her of this, it has removed a huge factor of stress and imbalances (again, insulin related), making it a lot easier to live with her condition. She also lost 33 kilos, despite being unable to exercise. I also know people who manage their diabetes with paleo eating rather than insulin (with guidance from medics).

So, I guess that is the overall consensus: All though paleo eating does not cure anyone for their condition, it does make it a lot easier to live with.

Sounds like you are approaching this in a sensible way by stripping down your diet and then adding one thing at a time to see whether it goes.
One of the many perks of preparing all your meals from scratch is that you don't get a lot of the additives, such as sodium. So, given that all the salt you eat is whatever you yourself add, I'm sure you could fit some cured meat into that every now and then. ;)
As for meals, I've actually found that eating 2 (or possibly 3) large meals during the day instead of smaller frequent meals makes my insulin levels more stable. :P But I do have some nuts, fruits, berries and a looot of tea in between.

Finally, just focus on the stuff you can eat, rather than the food you're excluding. I get a lot of people saying "For how long are you going to do this? What about all the stuff you can't eat?" Which is just weird to me, because I never think about the stuff I can't eat, because there is so much awesome stuff that I can eat.

Also, no ninja horse meat.

I don't take any supplements, but I've heard some people take magnesium supplements for some reason. As for websites, I only use food blogs, of which most of the recipes are in Norwegian. But I have translated many of them in my own cooking blog. Maybe that's helpful.
Phew long rant :P

The more I hear about this diet the more it sounds really worth doing! I've started looking into it, it doesn't sound that crazy or fad-ish really. My only concern is that I try not to spend long on making food as I like to free up time in evenings to work and stuff so have started looking up more simple paleo recipes to see if it would work for me. Loosing bread would be painful to start with but sure it could work eventually...
The general principle of it all seems sensible enough.

Unrelated: Currently writing a dating website profile as I have my eye on someone on there. My brain told me this is a good idea... I wish it could be more forthcoming with ideas of things to write that aren't totally mental. Also, trying to take a picture of yourself smiling when you have massive cheeks does not look good.

Looks like I'll be working Anzac Day. Well, I could use the extra money, and it will likely be quiet around the office, so that suits me.
