I'm still not sure I understand what the problem is here... Anyway: if you aren't satisfied with the current state of the forum, there are pretty much two ways to go on about it: Either find a better forum, or make this a better forum (I say go for the latter!). This is not something that is done by talking about it, or complaining that other people aren't doing anything about it, but by doing it.

It is important to understand that message boards are different from other social medias, that are a lot more fast paced with flashy fancy news, easily digestible tweets and a shitload of photos of cats and cheeseburgers. Message boards are more like an eternal lunch room where people most of the time sit in each corner reading, listening to music, knitting, smoking, having a snack... whatever, and every now and then they clash their heads together for heavy debates.
(damn... I now see a lot of other people have made this point )

I do feel at home here; that's why I continue posting. Sometimes families at home don't have anything to talk about at the end of the day; shit happens. As you've been here awhile like me I'm sure you've seen the forum fluctuates; at one time a lot of people will be posting, at another not as many. That's how it works. One of the big things with the lull (I don't see much of a lull, but apparently others do) can be attributed to Dev not being on the forums for awhile. And it'll pick up again, as it always does. A new crop will come in, just as an old crop goes out.

In terms of SYL quitting, I don't think that has much to do with this discussion, but of course I was bummed when they quit (I had never seen them live after all). But with the stellar work Dev has put out since I'm SO happy he shut down SYL; I love Dev's recent stuff, perhaps due to a connectivity it's had as I was a thorough fan through all these recent releases.

Times change, Dev and the forums being two examples. I've never seen much use in my life ever for yearning for the past.

besides the people I know on here who did leave had their personal reasons and it had nothing to do with the forums being too quiet.

Is there some mass exodus of forum users to the promised land I'm not aware of?

I mean, I'm aware of some things, but this doesn't sound like it's it.

I still love it here! This place is far better than Facebook or Twitter, for a lot of reasons.

Even though I check the forums relentlessly day in and day out, I did wake up having this feeling of missing it, probably cause I've been pretty zoned out lately. ANYWAY, I still think you guys are awesome and this is a place I go to restore faith in humanity a lot of the time. I hope you guys are doing great!

Not only the forums but the internet in general are a bit dull lately. I think everything that had to be written has been written and we've run out of meaning basically. Shit's being reposted in progressively faster cycles etc. It's good the world ends by friday because that might get seriously unbearable.

Theres an 'elite' group of people who hangs here constantly and to me doesn't seem very open minded to new users and such. Inside humor rolling all the time.
This is not Twitter, it's not facebook. This is a forum for everybody and not a place for ONE clan of people. It's really great that you've found eachother here and you all seem like very good friends but it's driving towards that more and more and thats my point. Guess thats the answere for the uh and confusion.

No, I wasn't really referring to anyone in particular. Of course you can offer your point of view it wasn't my intention to discredit you in any way I only meant that these "mass" exodus things have happened before and I think the 10 superthreads are a big contributor to that.

Yeah.. making any "changes" is a joint effort, which is why it is also important to note that the "elite" is just a bunch of individuals as much as anyone else here. They/we/whoever-the-elite-is are not as cohesive as it may seem.
Also, I think the major threads in the "general discussion forum" are great places to become a part of the social... stuff. I don't know what I am talking about really...

Honestly dude, you're pretty much right. And it's kind of a bummer.

This is not meant as a slight to my friends here, but it can be like a wall, and when it comes to Devin stuff it can often be a bit of a "who's got it right" situation these days. I'm afraid I've been a bit guilty of that, but a lot of it has to do with my sense of humor, mostly involving tormenting Pim on the two times I've been right about things. I'm going to make an active effort to try and seem less like a know-it-all (I'm not. I've just spent too much time here from back in the day when I could surf the forums while working on my old magazine's website, so a lot of old info gets stuck in the cobwebs) .

I joined here when I did after having an older account many years ago, due to the fact that in my world and still to this day no one in my direct life has even remotely the same interest in music as I do. It's a very important thing to me, and this was the only place that I was able to talk shit about the music I love. I imagine that's the case for a lot of people, but to be honest, sometimes you need a Dev longtime fan-translator to get through this shit. We were all noobs at one point, and I can imagine going to gigs with the folks you know can often be a wall to other newer folks who are just joining in.

Fortunately, as a douchey hipster, all of my friends are douchey hipsters and like music I find pretty bland (though can sometimes be pretty awesome. Me likey the Dirty Projectors), and whenever I go to a gig, I tend to meet someone new to shoot the shit with, which is way cool. That was the spirit that used to be here, and somehow has seemed to be missing over the past year. It doesn't matter who has done what, or what kinda inside-clique shit's going on, we could all stand to make a concentrated effort to be a bit more welcoming.

Hopefully with the holiday work at my chocolate warehouse dying down, my writing becoming a bit more steady and my film winding to a close I can take more time and care with what I do around here.


TL:DR version. We should try to be a little less in-jokey, and maybe try to freshen the place up.

No need to excuse yourself brother. I think most people here have a similar backround/investment to why they hang here. With that one thing led to the next and ended up here.
