So, any ideas on what the really fast vocals underneath the part after the "vegi-ma-tarian" line are?

Devin's part (left channel):
"Hit it. So like sex. And then there's like violence. And drugs. And crime. And beach? And God. And breasts. And chapters. And words. And money. And death. And tits? And fame. And fortune. And ego. And beer. Did he say beer? Kanpai! BEER BEER BEER!"

The other voice is impossible to transcribe. All I can make out is "water", "leak", "magazine", and "paper." It's all panned to the right channel though. So if you isolate that, you can at least filter out some of the other sounds and then slow it down.

So after listening to this a few (okay, MANY MANY MANY) times, every song has grown on me exponentially with one exception. I know I'll get grief for this... Sumeria.

Maybe this song just hasn't clicked with me, but I'm not seeing it as part of the big picture. Don't get me wrong. The song is great, and I'm a huge fan of Joe Duplantier. I just can't connect with this song like I can with the others. Still, enjoying!

Besides Praise the Lowered, that's the first song that totally clicked for me. Definitely my fav' track on Deconstruction.

What is it about Sumeria that you enjoy more than the other songs? I've read a few people saying that it's their favorite song, but I'm just not getting it like the others. Maybe I'm missing something? Again, I'm not saying it's not a bad song. I like it, but something's just... off.

And I still can't pick one favorite for this album!

Sumeria:
1. Fast energetic intro, creepy vocals.
2. Choir making it very theatric.
3. Catchy chorus consisting of booming choir and carnivalesque orchestra parts.
4. Demonic chilling screaming by Joe Duplantier.
5. Energetic track all the way through.
6. Drop from demonic screams and thick wall of sound to a single music box melody and weird sound effects.
7. Paul Masdival's beautiful vocal part.

It's just a good structured song, powerful, singable, energetic and awesome. I've seen a few people who think it's weak, I don't really get it, but those are my reasons for liking it anyway.

5. Energetic track all the way through.

I can't fully agree with this one. No one can argue that it isn't energetic, but I don't think it really has the same energy that the other tracks have. It's pretty constant (sans Paul's contribution), and most of the other songs either rely on some type of dynamic aspect (Praise the Lowered, Stand) or a balls-to-the-wall impact (Juular, Pandemic, Poltergeist) that I don't hear as much in Sumeria. It could very well be my own personal taste.

After all, life is all... okay, you know.

I here what you're saying for sure. Agree on it being more "constant" then some of the other tracks if that makes sense. I just think that kind of song works really well at that point of the album, breaking up two monsters really effectively. But yeah, different strokes and all that, tastes are tastes, etc. etc., life is good.

Besides Sumeria being a ridiculously awesome song, the only reason I need to absolutely love it is the line "This mind commands... Love and Acceptance!!"
The only two dudes in metal that could get away with saying that so strongly in a song are Townsend and Joe from Gojira. Awesome.

Mostly, it's the main riff (the "Hey now, through anger we hunger for God..." one). The creepily-beautiful chorus is great too, as is the outro with Paul. I dunno. I wouldn't say it's my favorite by a huge margin, but it's my favorite nonetheless. There's just something special about it, but I'm not sure how to articulate exactly what is.

The powerful eery opening and the delivery of"Oh, what do we know... about sacrifice and self-control? WHOA, WE DO NOT KNOW, 'CAUSE WE ARE ANIMALS- ANIMALS! INSTINCTUAL!" pretty much sold me on "Sumeria" immediately. To each their own. Oh, and "Through anger, we hunger for god" is an INCREDIBLE line.

One thing, though.... Why do we keep describing roars and screams as demonic? Is that just the word we've decided to use for this stuff?

I can see where you're coming from because that's pretty much how I feel about the title track.(though it's growing on me!)

For me, Sumeria is one of the strongest and heaviest tracks. The riffing is brilliant and the lyrics really do it for me. The opening "I have never known her love and I will never hold my child", is probably my favorite lyrics on the whole album and really stike home with me, heavy. Also the chant "Hey now, through anger we hunger for God" is catchy and sticks in my head The way Devin sings "Freeee..." is also a highlight.

Both of the guest vocalists are great too. All in all though, it's all perspective.

Sumeria seems not that great when I'm NOT listening to it. When I am, it's always awesome and I follow it with great joy.

Sumeria is pretty much my favorite (and Stand and Pandemic and Poltergeist and....) and has gotten the most play because it delivers really quickly, in contrast to the rest of the album, in regards to heavy, fast, energetic, and powerful context. It's pretty straight forward in structure compared to the other songs that are very chaotic and changing. That doesn't take away from their greatness at all. Just having something a little linear and accessible is a nice moment in this complex album.

The main riff, beat, "hey now" and "shower the world" chorus parts all paint a huge picture to soak in for bit before things deconstruct some more. There's a lot of incredible riffs and themes in the album, but most are pretty fleeting and don't get a chance to soak in. The nostalgic/dreamy music box sound with it's sudden injection is pretty powerful. It gives a moment to breath and relax for Paul's outro that's really beautiful.
I spliced it out and use it as my ring tone.
