I was reading http://www.metalsucks.net/2011/04/12/the-album-cover-for-the-devin-townsend-projects-deconstruction-is-kuh-ray-zee-er-than-usual/#comments and looking atthe comments when I saw this and burst out laughing :

Devin has a history of questionable album covers. I mean, look at Infinity. That shit was gross
---> Reply to this was : That was sexy and so is this album cover

I snorted with agreement and laughter

I really didn't like the cover on first look and hoped it would grow on me but it's the opposite. The more I look at it the less I like it.

Deconstruction, from all I've read and heard of it, is my most anticipated album by anyone in a long time, and it's a shame that (for me) the artwork doesn't really seem to match the concept. Maybe the hoodie figure is a reference (via nu-metal) to our adolescent feelings about heavy music. I dunno....

Hopefully Dev will explain what the cover means in connection to the concept (his album explanations are generally incredible) and I can get over it :)

If the album is about deconstructing our relationship with heavy music, and specifically Dev's feelings about SYL and his motivations in the past, then maybe a cover that combined broken down, deconstructed elements from all the SYL covers (with some new elements) would've worked.

Anyway, that's my idea thrown into the ring. I'm a massive Dev fan but pretty much a lurker on forums. I just felt quite strongly about the album cover so thought I'd say something.

Whatever the case is, the album's going to be incredible. Maybe I'll make my own DIY cover for it...

Dude, I TOTALLY agree. I had the Infinity cover as my wallpaper on my laptop at uni as it made people uncomfertable. They told me it was horrible, I told them they were jealous.

This would be my guess. It looks pretty cute, in any case.

I personally just wish there was more cohesion between the four album covers. I suppose the slipcase art does that job, but even then, the logo isn't consistent. Bottom line is, I would have done it differently, but it never was, and never will be, my call, so I might as well just suck it up and stop my bitching.

I just love the irony between the music and the cover. I love the cover. It gives me the tinglies in my stomach. If you see that cover in a store, what kind of music would you assume it is? Blast beats and tremolo picking with an epic choir and orchestra? HAEH :D

The thing is, this is the album cover Dev chose. It is the one that he thinks best represents the album. Whatever our expectations of what it should look like are, we are wrong. This is the cover. There is no better cover. The choice of cover isn't wrong. It's exactly right, whether we like it or not.

Isn't all this analyzing of and worrying over the cover art a bit ironic, given the theme/concept of the album? There's an awful lot of lifting-off-the-top-bun-to-closely-examine-the-cheese-slathered-patty-below going on here.
