Wizard man = <3
Before you can smell like him, you must learn how to make your handwriting as epic as his.

The Dev wrote:The label is cool. Great people, great friends. Their points were more based on the frustration that comes from one of their artists making the sales pitch they have to do to retail stores more complicated than they would like.

Retail only sees sales for the most part. And to release a record in todays market, for every record thats on the shelf, they remove the prior one (or the one before) You and I may like the stuff, (and the label does too...) but the average buyer at retail sees numbers and thats it. HMV is down to like 20% of what they used to stock, so there is very limited shelf space.

No villainizing of anyone here... just the reality of it.

A lot of people not in the business tend to forget that if an artist chooses to attempt to sell their music, it does indeed become a business. The more one wishes to sell, the bigger a business it becomes, and there are now people who have nothing to do with the artist's creative process that need to get paid. Of course these folks are going to want more of what they know sells, because their jobs depend on it. They need to eat, too. You can't blame them for that. There job is to not just keep the flow of money coming in, but to try and increase it any chance they can. 'Addicted' was the biggest selling album to date, I believe. It would be crazy for them not to attempt to cash in on that. That's just smart business.

I think Dev is maybe the only artist I listen to where I don't go into the next record thinking "Hey, it'd be cool if he did ...xxx"

I've done that with each of my other favourite bands, like "Wouldn't it be cool if Marilyn Manson did some black metal" "Billy Corgan should start playing piano in more songs" "Tool should play in something other than Drop D" "Soundgarden should NOT get back together"

With Dev I just think "man, what's gonna come outta that crazy fucker's head next?", and I'm invariably thrilled by it. It's not always my thing, I'll admit I'm not huge on Hummer or Accelerated Evolution, but they're still worth listening to just for some context, a snapshot of what's in the man's heart and fingers at the time, and they make the moments that REALLY stand out so much more special. The albums don't have to be completely consistent to still be amazing as a whole, and likewise for the entire body of work. There's ups'n'downs, twists'n'turns, and they all make one really epic journey.
E.g. I still love Judas Priest even though I think Ram It Down is lame.

The fact that the music, with the industry as it stands, is barely monetarily rewarding, if at all, sucks balls. But that struggle to make something that's a pure reflection of self, in the knowledge that it's probably not going to let you move into a mansion with a butler and two Ferarris, gives the music some extra heart, IMO, it's kind of like rooting for the underdog. Besides, I think Dev's hitting a new stride, his best years are certainly left in him.

Just curious, is there any place that you can find album sales?

Someone mentioned Addicted being Dev's biggest seller to date, but how have all the records (including SYL) done over time?

It's strange to me that more copies of Addicted are out there than Terria or Ziltoid. I don't doubt it, but those other two are desert island discs.

I don't remember where it was, but Dev said something to the effect that pretty much all of his albums have sold about the same. So maybe Addicted was the first to get more than that.

I honestly don't know how his albums haven't sold more.

What? No patchouli, ya hippy?

You know, I always thought patchouli was just a conditioner for dreads, but apparently it can be use to stop hair loss and stimulate hair growth:

Now you can smell like a hippy while attempting to grow hair like one. Genius, I say!
