Oh yeah, and the lighting was really good too. It'd be cool to see some more shapes like lasers n shit, I'm sure the Ominiscient would appreciate that, but I'm guessing the lighting depends on the venue ey.

And Deadhead's "you are so vicious, hurt me, I can take it!" was the best, both times! - so glad you sung it like the recording.

Air Cleaner wrote:Loved it. Pretty sure my ears were broken (still ringing pretty loud now), but it was great. Dev's vocals seemed to be pitch-shifted or something, it felt off. The whole set was amazing, and the Ziltoid radio was fantastic. I've never seen so many unimpressed faces at a headlining gig. Staying Alive was a fine touch.

Anyway, on to the acoustic set tonight, hopefully I can hear properly by then. Just being in the crowd was a total drain, so I'm amazed Devin is still standing to be honest.

Very happy. Also the mixing was average but the performance more than made up for it.

Are you the same Air Cleaner from LL?

Well, the bass player clearly cannot sing!

dude sometimes its not easy when you have a shit sound guy who doesn't feed your vox into the monitor. If you can't hear yourself, its not easy. One guitar or bass you can still hit the right note because its easy to find. So yeah, fuck man back off. He sung fine in sunshine and happiness did he not?

For one the front of house mix was quite bad.
Devin's vocal wasn't eq'd properly and often it was ear piercing. (not ear piercing in a good way)
There was too much high end in the whole mix in general, is devin's mixer partially deaf nowdays?
Others have commented that Brisbane and Sydney shows were way too loud as well so it seems there's a pattern forming here.

2. The comedy was good and that's one of the best things about Devin but it became a little grating after a while.
I was expecting him to be a little more professional.

3. The ending of ki with everything but devin's guitar and voice being played back off a laptop sounded very wrong. The vocals were excruciatingly loud in that section.

4. The bass player singing the start of bend it like bender was terrible. Please don't have him sing again.

5. The set didn't seem to be paced particularly well. There was quite a lull at the 3/4 mark of the show.

Not to fear though. There were many great moments. Earth day was brilliant. Life was just wonderful. I'm very glad you finally came here to play for us dev! Hopefully you'll sort through some of these issues.

After not coming here for 7 years, and it being the first round of a solo tour in god knows how long, you hardly have a right to complain about such specific things. He didn't have to come to Australia in the first place. You didn't like the comedy? That's Devin. It's his show, he can do whatever he wants. It's his first tour in ages, he needs a way to unwind and connect with the audience. That's his way. And as for point 4, you just need a fucking sense of humour.

The audio quality wasn't the best, neither was the venue. Dev's performance, F'n Fantastic.
Yeah Yeah, let's hope it's a good learning curve (and money maker) for something even more spectacular to come.

Where was the visuals? Female backing vocals?

"So be it" would be ace to hear with some trippy visuals. Dave Rocks!!!

I'm so shattered i missed the show, what a bad weekend, i've been waiting 7 years for this gig, now i'm probebly gonna have to wait 7 years more or maybe never be able to see such a performance again, the acoustic show is booked out too for tonight.... life goes on hey

Don't worry mate, it won't be seven years.

Not by a long shot. Get well. 8)

I'll just butt in here briefly to say "g'day" to the guys who were at the pub and show yesterday. It was good to finally meet yuz, and I hope you all had a great time. A brilliant show and a brilliant crowd. :amen:

Dude I've been to three of the shows so far and I have to take issue with what you have said here.

1. If you want the mix perfect don't go to a live show sit at home listening to the cd.

2. You are contradicting yourself, is his humour one of the best things about him or is it unprofessional... make up your mind.

3. I kind of agree Ki did sound a little off in parts last night.

4. Again, you want it to sound like the cd, go listen to the cd. I think Mr Beavis does a fucking awesome job singing the start of that song, it is way more fun than if it was just a sample.

5. Have you thought that maybe it was meant to be paced that way? Maybe there is supposed to be a lull so that when you get kicked in tha balls again it hurts more? I didn't really notice this supposed lull, but whatever.

I'm convinced that, as a punter, you'll never get a really good sound at a metal show if you're standing right up the front. :-\

I don't mind the layout of Billboard either, bit of a fire trap though. :P Although I'd really like to see a Devin show at The Forum. Great location and layout, gorgeous interior too instead of the usual paint-it-all-black-and-throw-some-mirrors-in style of most venues.

Let's put the clutch in here. I said that to me the comedy became a little "grating" after a while. I never said I hated his comedy. I think he has a great sense of humor.
Mr. Beavis was actually singing out of key, he wasn't singing in key. If you enjoy someone singing out of key then that's fine. I personally dislike it.
I wasn't expecting it to sound like the CD, I was expecting it to sound BETTER than the cd, and it didn't. My concerns are void anyway because now I am aware that Dev didn't have his own sound guy here.
The "vibe" seemed to drop off at the 3/4 mark for me, this is a personal opinion.

Yes. Maybe I'm getting old to notice shit like this. :?

To me a live performance has all the nuances of a live performance. From Dev singing out of key every now and then to the mix not being perfect. This is what comes with a live gig and last night was far from terrible. Dev's albums are beautifully produced and sound amazing with earphones but you're kidding yourself if you expect to fully hear that in a live setting.

Looking forward to the gig tonight - I'll be the nerd in the work suit....yeah!

I have to disagree with the "complaints" above, I thought the show was amazing, one of the best Ive seen. The dynamics of the set were amazing, it was an experience, rather than just a show. I don't think i can think of any artist, that is so honest and raw, be it deep or humerous, and that passion for life and fun is just so infectious. Inspirational.
The only complaint i personally have, is that it ended. I could have easily watched another 2 hours.
I would be commending the techies for the job that they did, rather than complaining, given the wide spectrum of styles and songs played, and the unique sound that anything Devin touches, i think overall it sounded amazing.
There is no one out there like Devin, he is just in a league of his own, a true artist.
Release a DVD of this stuff live already :)

Last night was one of the most awesome nights of my life! Sure the sound wasn't perfect but thats Live music. Devin and the band were EPIC and hearing By Your Command and Remember Namaste has made 2010 a year to remember! Laughed my arse off watching all us metal heads not knowing what to do when Venga boys came on, damn you Ziltoid!!!

Thanks for coming to Australia Dev! Come back to Melbourne soon!!!

i would have to disagree in saying that metal, death metal rarely sounds good live, I've seen Nile (the first time they came out) and necrophagist at the corner which i believe some of you might have too, the sound for those shows was phenomenal considering the music they play, i think some of the worst shows for metal is when its just too loud, if its too loud its hard to mix, i wonder who the local mixer was from melbs?
