Then they'll hear some SYL and start running to the hills :D

A lot of it has to do with accessibility I think. Something that's easy to get into will appeal to a lot more people. Doesn't matter how shallow it is.

For sure. All of the CDs I think have great coulda been singles on them.
OM- Hide Nowhere
Infinity- Bad Devil
Terria- Canada/Stagnant
Acc. Evolution- Random Analysis
Physicist- Material
ZTO- Hyperdrive
And of course, who can forget Vampira?

That's why I posted that one thread, about which song would sound the best as a single, just in case Dev wanted to release one he'd have an idea about what people liked.

On the record industry, it's not just Canada... Taste is fucked in many countries! I've got a lot of respect for the talented musicians who found a way to bypass the bullshit of the industry and get their music out to people, like the Dead, Zappa, NIN, Phish. I think a great recent example of that energy is Dweezil Zappa putting together a touring band to do a damn good job of playing his father's music. When Devin puts so much into his music to make it intricate, colorful, and having the sound (I'm talking the actual NOISE) be so alive and real sounding, I think that's something that also reaches people on behalf of the benevolent spirit of music, in an even more direct way. It actually offends me a bit that people would look at Devin's music as this crazy thing.

The Dev wrote:I´m sorry...I have to make this record, I don´t get it (Nickleback) I´m sorry to be hung up on it, it´s just in my face living in Vancouver...I want to make a point about Canadian music. I will never be invited into the ´club´ for whatever reason, and I don´t think that will change if I try to suck up for some chance at being a part of that machine in order to feed my kid.

I want to make an observation musically. I´ve wanted to be accepted in Canada since the beginning, and apparantly I´m invisible, so I think now would be just as good a time as any to say: I DON´T ACCEPT YOUR MOTIVATION! Avril, Nickelback, etc etc...

I DON´T GET IT!!! I might be missing something, but have any of you ever tried to watch Canadian idol? Or Muchmusic?

REEEKS of effort.

There are INCREDIBLE musicians and artists in Canada that have to LEAVE Canada to make any real headway. And then once you LEAVE, You are NOT INVITED INTO THE CLUB.

You lost me there a bit. You're jealous about Lowest Common Denominator Club? And where's that mythical country where Simple Songs About Fucking aren't most popular ones?

Canada has plenty of world-wide respected music - just like guys mentioned, there's plenty of well known metal bands or cult industrial classics like Skinny Puppy and Frontline Assembly, electronicians like Venetian Snares etc. It's obvious it always will be less supported in media than latest heroes of the tabloids, but it has more stable and smarter fanbase (AREN'T WE) than Avril le Nickelbagne & friends.

BTW I dunno if you noticed but you have "legend" status, 95% of comments on youtube is praising how awesome you are. I rarely see such unified opinions on the internets. Do you really want to share league with Nickelback?

Devin's problem is that his music isen't generic... He tries, he dares, he explorer...

Must people just want some simple popstructure, 4/4 music with easy lyrics and hard to forget.. Many bands can provide that..

But in some cases, unique bands do make it large. Just look at Muse. really not mainstream in my oppinion, yet they are huge in UK.
(And yea, even though I have a sheild against all "cool" music I find Muse fucking awesome.)

...Yet, I would like his material to be more populare. More money = Less problems.. :P

Sorry about the rant last night guys...

Just brainstorming in public, I tend to cycle through thoughts until I land on the one that I´m trying to reach...a gory process of elimination.

No I don´t want to be part of that club, and the support I get is unbelievable.

I´m just writing in public...the end is always different, but the ways I find inspiration are...well...

...best left private?

Talk to you in a few!

What I´m wondering though, is if you COULD be vauge, yet say something really pointed at the same time, and wrap it in that aesthetic, maybe you could make a hilarious point?

Especially if the lyrics are subversive?

I see absolutely no reason why not. However, what I was trying to relay was simply that people don't often see the point if it is too specific. If it can't relate to them, they won't give it as much credit as it often deserves.

I have a fear that I give people for too much credit for being intelligent; while I do feel that is exceedingly arrogant and pompous, it's unwittingly true. The general consensus tries to simplify things - and in actuality, the simplier things are the better. However, sometimes people seem to miss the deeper meanings due to over simplifying art and its meanings.

Ziltoid I feel is exactly what you described: not too specific (pretty refined story wise, but not too in depth), with an insightful underlying message, wrapped in an appeasing package and downright hilarious more often than not. The lyrics clearly reflect your immediate feelings about certain life situations (unless I am mistaken, you did in fact write it, so correct me if I'm wrong) and where you stand emotionally with them.

Ultimately, you do indeed have to do what makes you happy. That is all what truly matters; and while you may not agree that your point was not seen clearly in Alien and Infinity due to you not being in the sober state you're in now, the results thus far have been nothing short of remarkable. Your need to explore your musical boundaries - if you will - and send a clear message will only further fuel your creativity and desire to create more refined works.

Just know this, you have a legion of fans who are devoted to whatever you do because you have never let them down. With every new release, your dynamic style simply opens doors to new fans ready to see the creative wonders of Devin Townsend.

Thanks for the inspiration thus far, I'm going to go play Hyperdrive on guitar now cause it's one of my favorites to play.

We still love you Devin....

I personally enjoy it when you think in public.....cuz it lets me know you are human, and kinda crazy just like me.

As Godly as your music is, sometimes it is hard to realize you ARE human and not some alien from another planet (Ziltoid, maybe?). These forums really help with that.

The Ki sampler has me all giddy....Addicted sounds fun.......and the snippets of Deconstruction on the youtube vid sound like the crazy music I hear when I suddenly wake up out of r.e.m. sleep, and I am REALLY curious about the whole "symphony" aspect....

Are you scoring an actual orchestra? Or software?

Dan

P.S.- "So be it" is the greatest inspiration I have had in a long time.....now my fave thing to do is jam with my keyboard player!
