Heyyyyy!! What's that supposed to mean?!

As I said in another thread, I only own 3 Dev related things (1994 - 2006: Chaos Years, Synchestra, Ocean machine T-shirt), but I admire your body of work so much, I DO plan on getting everything (well, maybe not S&R, Vai has enough!
) sometime really soon.
I'd like to clarify something though; Which "projects" do you make more money from? I can only assume you make the least from SYL stuff, and the most from stuff like Ki & Ziltoid, right?

With each listen, KI is growing inside me. Absolutely beautiful music, music that deserves many ears and many minds. The only compliment that I can see as fitting would be this...while listening to it, all I want to do is create. It's inspired these hands to pick up that brush, set my easel and tear shit up. Thank you, for continuing to create music, your tunes have been an inspiration for me for over ten years now, thank you.
And yes, I will be buying this one as well. I'm waiting for the pre-order through hevydevy.com. I would rather give the money directly to the source over amazon or the local corporate record shop. anyone know if there will be a special or limited release of the record????

He said in another post that if he wanted to make a lot of money (syl) he would, so i assume he makes more with strapping than anything else, which makes sense. Though they're not huge, Strapping is pretty much legendary in the metal scene.
The Dev wrote:Well, in terms of downloading...what do I think?
It fucking sucks.
But it's stupid to say, 'don't do it', it's going to happen.
Download u2 and Metallica, but an independant artist? I'm cool if you do it, but just to know if you want it I guess...check it out, honor system?
I don't know, I'm broke, and I'm not going to do the things (syl) that will bring me in a shitload of money for, (I don't know...) 'spiritual' reasons.
I'm qualified to do nothing else. Honestly, If you want to download it and get the word out, awesome! The more the merrier...I do this for the art primarily. But the more I sell, the more I tour, the better they sound, and the more time I can spend doing it.
But TRULY, who cares? My brother in law says 'fuck the musicians, download everything' and I love him, so...I don't know. Do what thou wanna.
If I don't sell anything, maybe thats a good thing? Folks tend to pay attention to what I say and write, and again...fucked if I know what life is about...maybe not being a musician would be less hassle..
(like I could ever stop...)
But I tell you, it will be harder to do what I do while slinging shit for a living, but I'll do what I have to (within reason) for my family.
I'd like to clarify though, that when I said 'go ahead and download' that wasn't a passive aggresive guilt thing...I'm serious, go ahead. But liking it, and not supporting the 'cause' doesn't seem overly grateful.
My buddy yesterday told me he downloaded everything I have ever done in about 2 hours...and he's still my buddy. It's INEVITABLE, anyone who fights it is facing artistic extintion anyways.
I guess though, because I sell VERY LITTLE anyways, if the only people that DO support it stop buying it, I won't be able to do it anymore (let alone tour...there's no incentive for the promoter other than sales to go on)
I figure, because it's inevitable, I'll try and be active on the internet...give away some free music, and hope that some people buy the stuff. Again...GO AHEAD AND DOWNLOAD, it's not a moral judgement, I personally think it sucks because I make a living from it, so that seems fair on my part.
Check it out, if you don't like it, especially in this economic climate, I TOTALLY understand you not buying it...but of you like it, EVEN IF YOU DON'T BUY THE ALBUM, please buy something...we'll have new merch up soon.
If I was independently wealthy (metallica, u2) you could have it for free. But right now, I'm still mowing grass, taking out the garbage, and getting tax bills that are crazy.
I appreciate the support even if you don't buy anything...truly, tell a friend I don't suck. Tell a friend I do suck, maybe they hate you secretly and will check it out based on that
sorry, long morning...
love,
dev
I've discussed this exact topic with my friend on numerous occasions. We steal albums right when they leak and that includes yours. We also support the artists we like and we have bought everyone of your albums even after we already stole it. Ki will be no different and neither will Addicted.
We're huge fans and asking us to wait just isn't reasonable. We've waited for years for Ki and waiting another day is just torture. Over the weekend my friend called me immediately after he read that it had leaked. We were both searching for copies of it at the same time over the phone ready to send the other the first working link. I have to say that I loved it. I could feel my heart pounding and a sense of euphoria as adrenaline pumped through my veins. That's real fandom and I couldn't even begin to describe the excitement I felt at those moments. When the first notes started I was practically shaking with nervous excitement. I had to calm myself down so I could relax and enjoy the album. It took until the third track for me to actually "hear" the music.
With that being said I need to say whose fault was this? Why did it have to come to this? I assume, maybe wrongly, that the album was given to some douchebag "journalist" to review, probably negatively, before anyone else heard it. In this day and age of the internet why should some be given this opportunity before others? How is their opinion more important than mine? They probably didn't even like it and would rather listen to Nickelback or whatever. In the end thou I owe them my gratitude.
But enough with the blame already. This is the post MTV era with the world wide web destroying what little is left of our patience and attention spans. MP3s are the modern format of music. My friend doesn't even like cds anymore. The take up too much space and you need to switch them out too often when you want to hear something different.
You have to become the leaker if you want control of the leaks. If I could have bought it I would have. It would be nice to know that I could go to one site and know it was there. No searching, no unwanted viruses, and no potential lawsuits from uploading to an invitation only site. There's money to be taken by you from me. As of right now I couldn't even give you money if I wanted to. Look at the success of itunes, Radiohead, NIN, hell even Guitar Hero sells a shitload of music for people to play on their plastic keytars.
Now unfortunately I know the headaches for starting your own pay to download site must be enormous with all the servers, programmers and security but it's a necessary evil. This is your business and I hate to tell you how to run it but this is how I honestly feel. I also think the reality of the situation speaks for itself. All the options will be yours and you can choose to sell the mp3s with a cd or not but that's your call.
I don't envy you in that I wouldn't want to go through all this hassle but you need to do what's best for you. All I know is I would have loved to bought this album a couple of weeks ago.
Sorry for this long rant but the topic is close to my heart and I couldn't think of anyone else I'd rather share it with.
Ok so I had to get it, and I am blown away. It's so beautiful, one of the most beautiful things I've ever heard!!! The atmosphere is perfect!
Heaven Send is my fav right now, still trying to take it( the album) in, so much imagery and emotion. I can't wait til I can actually hold it in my hands!

Yo guys!
Yeah, spent the day thinking about it. Your support is awesome.
I had money problems this morning and freaked out.
Downloading is fine, and actually probably helps me.
Sorry for the rant.

That's cool of ya to say Dev, I always feel bad when I download a leaked version of one of your albums, but I can safely say you're probably one of only two artists where it's not because I want to sample it before I buy it - it's because I can't fucking wait to hear it and my pre-order's haven't arrived yet. I've bought every one of your CD's/DVD's (sometimes twice to get bonus tracks, grabbed two copies of Alien on vinyl as well), enough Devy shirts to clothe a small town (any chance of another run of City shirts? Just like the old one, with the old logo and all? My shirt has developed large holes from Strapping moshpits.), and seen Strapping live a few times (only because I wasn't 18 last time you did a non-SYL show in Australia, even planned my holiday to the states instead of Europe so I could catch SYL at Sounds of the Underground in Vancouver).
Anyway, I'll continue to buy all your shit as long as you keep making it dude, and looking back at what I've wrote it's exactly the same as many others have written in this thread so that's fucking cool. I'll be buying all four of these records as well as the box set the end.
As for Ki - it's fucking amazing. I didn't know what to expect but it certainly wasn't this - even after hearing the 4 minute sample. I've probably listened to it a dozen times in the last few days and I just can't get enough. The only thing stopping me from listening to it more is that I don't want to put it on until I'm sure I have an hour to myself to give it the attention it deserves. Can't wait to hear how the four all go together.

I've been a fan of Dev for years. I've waited for Ki for ages. It would be amazing to download and listen to it right now - but I refuse.
I remember the days when I was a teenager, when ordering online, let alone downloading, was the stuff of a madman's dreams. When an album was due to come out - you waited. You got excited, you heard the odd track on magazine cover CDs. Then on the day of release, you got the thing in your hands, put it on for the first time, read the inlay card. It was great!
I eventually found myself downloading tons of music. Within a year or so my music collection had increased 10-fold. And I soon realised I just didn't get excited by it anymore. What does that band sound like? I know, I'll download everything they've ever done, listen to some of it, and maybe delete it if it doesn't instantly impress me.
To download Ki is understandable, but I'm not doing it. To come on here, where Devin regularly visits, and to tell the world that you're listening to it - well, I think its crap. Devin seems to be OK with it, but feeling just 'OK' for working your ass off on something sucks. He should be ECSTATIC. I know this might sound like I'm on my high-horse, but it's my honest opinion

Please don't apologise for ranting. Feels like you're apologising for being human.

Thank you to whoever got this thread back on topic a bit. We could all converse about religion and spirituality for 1000 years and still not be anywhere......its a matter of choice.
I feel what alot of peeps have said. I was a downloading maniac for awhile, and it sort of desensitized me to music in general. I lost my zeal. When I was young I had to painfully anticipate the new release from say....Death, or Dream Theater or something, and, then I had to actually CALL venues to see who MIGHT be playing soon. Now everything is almost too convenient, but nonetheless.....I am sucked into it. I was fiending for Ki so bad I did hear it Sunday.....but now I am almost more excited because I am curious about the packaging. When I hear music, I relate colors and images to the sound. I wanna know what Devin intended here. Like Terria.....that album would come across completely different if it had a bunch of red and black on the cover/layout. I know he will not disappoint.....
Looking forward to Ki shirts, I might have to order a new infinity shirt or something just to tide me over.
