It fucking sucks.

But it's stupid to say, 'don't do it', it's going to happen.

Download u2 and Metallica, but an independant artist? I'm cool if you do it, but just to know if you want it I guess...check it out, honor system?

I don't know, I'm broke, and I'm not going to do the things (syl) that will bring me in a shitload of money for, (I don't know...) 'spiritual' reasons.

I'm qualified to do nothing else. Honestly, If you want to download it and get the word out, awesome! The more the merrier...I do this for the art primarily. But the more I sell, the more I tour, the better they sound, and the more time I can spend doing it.

But TRULY, who cares? My brother in law says 'fuck the musicians, download everything' and I love him, so...I don't know. Do what thou wanna.

If I don't sell anything, maybe thats a good thing? Folks tend to pay attention to what I say and write, and again...fucked if I know what life is about...maybe not being a musician would be less hassle..

(like I could ever stop...)

But I tell you, it will be harder to do what I do while slinging shit for a living, but I'll do what I have to (within reason) for my family.

I'd like to clarify though, that when I said 'go ahead and download' that wasn't a passive aggresive guilt thing...I'm serious, go ahead. But liking it, and not supporting the 'cause' doesn't seem overly grateful.

My buddy yesterday told me he downloaded everything I have ever done in about 2 hours...and he's still my buddy. It's INEVITABLE, anyone who fights it is facing artistic extintion anyways.

I guess though, because I sell VERY LITTLE anyways, if the only people that DO support it stop buying it, I won't be able to do it anymore (let alone tour...there's no incentive for the promoter other than sales to go on)

I figure, because it's inevitable, I'll try and be active on the internet...give away some free music, and hope that some people buy the stuff. Again...GO AHEAD AND DOWNLOAD, it's not a moral judgement, I personally think it sucks because I make a living from it, so that seems fair on my part.

Check it out, if you don't like it, especially in this economic climate, I TOTALLY understand you not buying it...but of you like it, EVEN IF YOU DON'T BUY THE ALBUM, please buy something...we'll have new merch up soon.

If I was independently wealthy (metallica, u2) you could have it for free. But right now, I'm still mowing grass, taking out the garbage, and getting tax bills that are crazy.

I appreciate the support even if you don't buy anything...truly, tell a friend I don't suck. Tell a friend I do suck, maybe they hate you secretly and will check it out based on that :)

sorry, long morning...

love,
dev

Dude, what's stopping you going down the NIN route? Sure you aren't as commercial an entity, but you have your fair share of fanatics who would gladly buy all that you produce. I dunno, 8 dollars for a high quality album dowbload or something, 16 dollars for the download and the ohysical release. I think Steve Austin is doing it now as well (not the wrestler obviously. Although that would be cool).

In this day and age, musicians like Devin and other independent artists are literally living off the good will of their fans.

We love his music, we love what he does, and we feel he deserves our money for entertaining us, so we gladly give it to him. If we didn't want to pay for his stuff, then we wouldn't, it's not like it'd be difficult to get it for free.

Devin actually understands that and accepts that, and hell for that I respect the guy even more than I did before.

As long as people listen I'm happy.

If it makes you feel any better, you'll definitely find my buying! =D And I should pick up copies of your other stuff, too...

Yup, pretty much everything depends on mutual trust between artist and the audience and that's everything you need. Which apparently not everyone understands and some artists like to declare their assumption that their audience is bunch of potential thieves and should be forced to buy stuff otherwise they don't know what's right. Anyways, thanks for further ensuring me I'm supporting the right man :)

That rant of you is pretty good thing to paste under any "downloading kills music" article over the internet actually. Freeloaders won't kill music, they wouldn't buy it anyway. Lack of trust can kill it.

FWIW, I was introduced to your music via a friend who just handed me everything on mp3. I have since bought everything on CD proper, and introduced a few other friends, and sometimes I buy CD's as gifts for people who need a little encouragement to listen.

I can't help but think that your paying fan-base and income statement can only grow in time...I would be optimistic if I were you.

Yar, downloading does suck man, but on the other hand, CD's are disgustingly expensive sometimes. I remember buying Infinity and Physicist at the same time as a lowly English student in Stirling. Buying both together cost about 35 pounds (this was in Virgin, before it became zavvi). I didn't mind, as if you love music you'll get it whatever the price, but it meant that my food budget was maaaajorly depleted that week, and I continued to be a malnourished husk, living off beans, toast and spliffs.

I guess people have become so pissed off at being ripped off throughout the years by labels and shops, that when a cheap easy alternative comes along, you're going to use it. I don't think there's anything malicious about it. I know a few people who buy stuff after 'sampling' it online.

I reckon another way to go would be to offer low quality (96kbps or something) versions free. You get to hear it, but if you want to hear it in full on flawless glory, you pay for it.

I dunno man. I'm just throwing ideas around. Like it or not, digital stuff is here to stay. Best move with the tide or get destroyed by it.

Before internet:
I was listening to music -> I was buying CD.

Now since internet :
I'm listening to a shit load of music ! -> I'm buying more CD.

Great point man! I sometimes download a couple of songs off an album and if i like it i buy it imediatly. Im my opinion a true music fan wouldn't just download the album for free and be done with it, i think if you really like an artist you should support their hard work and buy the album.

On another note, im pretty sure the song 'Ki' is one of the best songs i have ever heard; especially the build up to the end with devs operatic type vocals, it sounds fuckin incredible!

No worries from me Dev, I'm going to wait and buy the box set of all four together and the DVD's. You have my word on that my friend. And fyi, I have bought all of your records, at some point or other, some of them twice, cause of scratches. Also, loads of your stuff from the flooded basement sale as well. Please put some ocean machine hats for sale at some point if you can, my house burned down and I lost all my ocean machine stuff. I think it's awesome you are being so open minded to the internet. You'll come out on top man, stop thinking your music is bad, IT'S FAR FROM BAD! You'll always have my support, both in spirit, and monetarilly. I can't imagine a world with no new Dev. That would be a sad world indeed.
