Someone on the opeth messageboards just posted this... :D

'I hooked up with Duris Maxwell. (The drummer in KI)
i just asked of what he thinks about the album. This is what he said.'

"Ki is clearly a departure from much of what Devin is noted for. And that is rather sad to me because he has SO much to say musically.

As I see it, Ki is really about the universe of music that has always lived inside Devin - a part at least. But then, Devin is an immense talent...and far more than the specific expression represented by Strapping Young Lad, for example.

I love the new CD and am enormously honoured to have helped Devin bring his musical vision into reality."

Man I can't wait for this album. Yes it was Strapping that got me into Devin and I love those albums but I love everything else the man has ever recorded. If he brought out an album tomorrow consisting of Summerian folk text transcribed to traditional Chinese arrangements I'd buy it and get the same effect as Ziltoid, Alien, Devlab or Terria.

And although I've gone a bit crazy with Summerian gibberish Dev always seems to bring us in new musical directions, introducing new philosophies on what constitutes a song and production and mood, and frankly my mind is racing daily as to imagine what's waiting for us on these 4 albums. All I know is that whatever it is, it will be of the highest quality. And if Maxwells comment is anything to go by maybe we're about to hear a side of Dev that aint made it to an album yet? Nerd Alert is kind of evidence to support such a notion and I can't help but think we'll hear something similar on Cheeseburger perhaps.

Arg! My mind is racing and I have to sleep now. Weak....

Strange...Duris is both sad and psyched because of Devin's change of style?
Anticipation is growing however...For releases in the past I've had a sort of vision in my head of how the new album would sound, of course it's never correct but... this time I have no clue what so ever. 8)

I think duris was sad that Devin hasn't had the opportunity to show all of his talents and that hes sort of been pigeonholed as ' that crazy metal guy' with SYL.

Ahh, yeah it's sad that most people don't know the full range of his works/capability.

Hey everyone, i used to have an account on here some years ago, but it got deleted for some reason. Just wanted to say that Devin Townsend changed my life. His music is more than just music to me, its such genious and so intriquate, and the anticipation of Ki is killing me. The Dev could make a country album and id love it :D So Devin if youre listening, thank you for your music, "Christeen" is amazing!

That's true, most people don't know Dev's range- I was talking to a guy at my college who had actually heard of him (the first here, which was exciting), but he was like, "Oh yeah, my brother listens to Devin Townsend... his music is really funny." Or something like that. And sure, Dev's humor is a staple in some of his music, but that fellow had clearly never experienced the emotional power of, say "Deadhead," "Storm," "Nobody's Here," I could go on. And of course, many people just know SYL.

Same, no music makes me 'feel' as much as Devs.

I agree- Dev's emotional expression is the best. And unlike most metal musicians, he's got a full range- happy and sad, angry and loving, lonely and triumphant. The humor is fun too... but I'd be lying if I said I didn't get chills the first few times I heard the ending of "Storm."
