Albums mixed in 5.1?

Hi everyone,

Dev, how would you feel about someday remixing your past (and present) albums in 5.1 surround sound?

I myself, am a HUGE fan of albums done in 5.1, but done right! It adds a whole other level of immersion and atmosphere when listening to a 5.1 mix.

The first album I heard in 5.1 was NIN's With Teeth, then I bought TDS. And those albums sound AMAZING!

I also have Lamb of God and Opeth, but they do not sound as well mixed. Or maybe it's just the nature of the sound of those bands (very heavy).
And Porcupine Tree is MADE to be listened in 5.1 ...

But to hear likes of Ocean Machine, or Synchestra, or Terria in 5.1 would be a gift..

I think Tracy got asked about this a fair while back, and said it's a project that "probably wouldn't interest Dev all that much" or something along those lines, search if you want to find it... but times may change, who knows. Revisiting and re-mixing could be a possibility.

I believe that Devin doesn't like to revisit his work for remixes and such. Besides, not a lot of people have a 5.1 set and a habit of listening to music on it, so I doubt it'll be worth putting a lot of effort into making 5.1 mixes, financially. So I don't see it happening.

Unfortunately Biert probably hit the nail on the head. Terria in 5.1 would be a cream dream though.

I understand going back and remixing older albums might be a stretch, but I'd like to hope he'd be open to the possibility of releasing future albums with a 5.1 special edition.

Or maybe for the DTP boxset?

IT would be amazing to hear terria in 5.1 IMO.. i love that Album.

Though one of the next upcoming albums beyond what dev already has instore for us.. written with the idea of 5.1 in mind.. that would be better.

We've heard what devs creative mind can do with stereo being its medium... the epitomy of stereo music IMO.. imagine what the genius would do if he 'Planned' and 'wrote' an album around the 5.1 speakers???

or what about 7.1???

You only have 2 ears, stereo should be enough :P

You clearly haven't had the pleasure of hearing great music in 5.1. Porcupine Tree have added surround mixes to all of their reissues lately. In fact, I'm waiting for my DVD-A version of The Incident to arrive. I challenge you to find In Absentia on DVD-A and see what surround composition can do to a stereo record. Even listening to the dolby 5.1 mix (lossy) is awesome. There's so much more room for tones to develop in the soundstage. When you can divert channels for ambient sound and background vocals, guitars and bass naturally have more space to breathe. Even Opeth's Still Life reissue sounds fantastic and presents a much more immersive listening experience.

A simpler response could have been: your ears can pick up sound in 360 degrees so stereo isn't enough.
