Ayreon question

I just bought the Human Equation by Ayreon mainly for Devin.
its a good cd, a little long, but i have to ask.
I love devins growls, especially on terria, they're not deep ala Opeth or Moonspell, but they work. However here, especially at the end of loser they seem high pitched and hard to understand.
Was this deliberate or an off day.
Theyre not bad just at times i cant understand a word being said, it sounded less like rage and more like Michael jackson trying growling.

Just a thought

I think what Devin does can be better described as screaming as opposed to growling. It's done in a different way, less of rumbling in your diaphram and more of squeezing a note in your throat until it distorts. Much harder to do in my opinion, especially since he can do so in pitch.

That being said, I have no problem with those screams on Loser. I thought they were pretty cool and outstandingly hard to replicate.

i thought that the end of 'loser' was AWESOME! the song just suddenly exploded into raging Devness!

i also agree that what he's doing isn't even related to growling. screaming is much harder on your throat.

Devin isn't growling at the end of "Loser". He uses his growls on the first disc though. His vocals on "Loser" are among the most amazing moments of the album.

The Human Equation is my favourite 2004 release so far.

Devin is being voted second favourite singer on the new Ayreon record, first being Akerfeldt.

I love Devin's screams. I've never heard anyone that could do anything even remotely close to what Devin does. It totally baffles me. I love it I love it I love it!

I totally agree.

Devin's vocals on the album are brilliant. I shake my head in disbelief every time Loser finishes. I just go...WOW.

Can't say much more about them, since I agree the screams on "Loser" were killer. However, I have to say I'm surprised and pleased that Akerfeldt was able to work some of his growls in there.

I love this CD. Dev's Loser parts are excellent and the screams are perfect. I really love his vocal part in track 8. Was that Arjen's melody or Dev's. I know he came up with the words, but the melody?

Well, The Dev came up with everything for what he did on this album.
The explanation is that he didn't want to sing other people's melodies and lyrics... Something like that.
Anyway, I like "Day Eight: School" the most when speaking of Devy's appearance on the record...
I reallly love those harmonies in the background...
"Bleeding ot gone into the profit of the competition, loving today" etc., etc...
Well, I think the record is brilliant, the best of the year so far...
Let's metal!

http://www.arjenlucassen.com/news/news.php?news_id=93 for Arjen's comments about Devin.

From that it would imply that the melodies were written by Arjen and Devin just did the lyrics, but I'm sure on the DVD for the album he suggests Devin had complete artistic control over his parts.

Aye, me too :)

Great album btw. Best of the year so far by a long shot.
