Gday all, I'm an Aussie Dev and SYL addict and worshipper, and have been since City was released (can you BELIEVE that's nearly a decade ago!!). This is my 1st post on here. I'll give my personal ratings for all the solo records.....
Ocean Machine: 12/10
Infinity: 13/10
Phycisist: 11/10
Terria: 12/10
AE: 12/10
Syn: 12/10
So I s'pose that makes Infinity my favourite, but really I just adore everything the man has ever put his name to.
Favourite Dev song: Earth Day. That song just brings a tear to my eye every time I hear it.
I've always loved SYL too, and up until just recently I felt I loved SYL and the solo stuff equally. But recently the solo has JUST been edging SYL out, pretty much since Synchestra came out.
That's my intro speil!
1. Ocean Machine (the zenith of music)
2. Infinity (had Om, Sit In The Mountain and Processional been included and Colonial Boy omitted, this might have had a fighting chance for #1, since it does contain the greatest song ever - Truth)
3. Synchestra (the first three tracks KILL, but it just doesn't have that cohesive flow of OM. Still a ridiculously badass album)
4. Terria (the strat sound and vibrato vocals just grate on me too much, but Mountain still levels me)
5. Physicist (a remix and remaster might save this album)
6. Accelerated Evolution (simplified Devin is an oxymoron to me)
I still love all of the albums to death, but I just can't see how anything will ever surpass Ocean Machine. Every single element - production, lyrics, vocals, atmosphere, artwork, flow, originality, timbre and overall quality of the instruments' sound, etc. - is done so flawlessly and so articulately that it just instantly resonates with my soul. No other album has ever affected me the way OM did and still does, every single time I spin it. It's the only album I have ever called a masterpiece. I've never used the word for Master Of Puppets, Reign In Blood, Rust In Peace, Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son, Lateralus, Vulgar Display Of Power, The Jester Race, Slaughter Of The Soul, or any of the other so-called masterpieces. Ocean Machine leaves them all drowning in its wake.
