I went in looking for Synchestra because my friend showed me Vampira, but I ended up getting Ziltoid.
Glad it ended up that way because I obsessed over that CD for a good week haha

My first Dev experience was seeing their performance at Hultsfred in 03 (?). I then checked out his MP3.com page where they had Devour and OMFG. I didn't even know what to think, but I knew it was powerful and insane. I eventually purchased HAARHT, City, No Sleep, and SYL in one single order from Hevydevy.com and then became so obsessed I decided I needed all his solo projects too. So a few weeks later I ordered OM, Infinity, Physicist, Terria, and AE in one single Hevydevy.com order and listened to them all back to back in one day. My mind was bloooown. Been a devout follower ever since.

About six or seven years ago I was big into Dream Theater and used to visit their message boards somewhat frequently. I kept hearing about Devin Townsend and had been meaning to try out some new music, so I decided to order Terria online without even listening to any samples. It was unusually impulsive of me, but I had an inexplicable good feeling about it.

I don't think I've ever been so captivated by something on my first listen before. I know Devin has pointed toward Truth as an opener that demands the listeners attention, but with Olives I felt like I was being drawn into something so unique and mesmerizing that I absolutely had to follow the music wherever it was going. Then Mountain utterly blew my mind. Then Earth Day. I didn't know a such a mind could exist to create such music. I think that's what got me, I felt like I was listening to some kind of vivid sonic portrait of one individual's mental landscape. I had never felt that way from listening to music before.

I bought Ocean Machine after only having heard Truth off of Infinity. It was just lying around in the store, so I figured I might just take a chance and get it, and boy was I happy I got it!
After that, I ordered most of his back catalogue, and started developing a taste for harder stuff because of Physicist.

Heard the song, "Love?"

Thought that it was THE definition of what heavy music is/should be.

Bought The Human Equation.

Devin's voice easily became my favorite on the album.

Bought Synchestra.

Fell in love.

Ziltoid.

I started off with Terria, went to SYL for a bit of City, then worked upward from Ocean Machine, until the present day with Addicted. :D

First Devin experience ever was love :D ..My Cousin Tim lent me a "Metal Hammer" DVD with the Music video for Black Label Society's "In The River". One Day I forgot to press repeat on this video and the next one came on...Strapping young lad - "Love?", I had this old looking, bald, sweaty man screaming at me and the guitars were mental and the drums were quick as...It gave me such a buzz, that all the other music was just terrible in comparison, to this day, I'm still heavily addicted to Devin Townsend and Strapping young lad..and don't listen to anything but that and Rammstein :D

DTB/P and SYL managed to get me off about 40 bands i loved xD

Alien.

People kept recommending it to me, and when I got around to getting it, it was like "Holy crap!" - I had stopped listening to 'metal' because it was predictable and boring, but this got me back into it. Good metal should scare you... it should be crazy and aggressive and Alien made me shit my pants.

Now I'm thinking Ki and Addicted are the best things I've heard since forever.

Synchestra for me - Sunset in particular just blew me away.

However, my first Devin Experience was watching SYL with Arch enemy in 2005 I think. To be perfectly honest, I didn't care for or about Strapping at all when I saw them (I was young and naive in metal at the time, only just beginning to get into metal after running my grunge resources dry).

In hindsight, I'm really disappointed at myself about it because there are hundreds of Devin and Strapping fans that never got to see them, but I did, and didn't like it.

Terria. I bought it because of one of those "Listmania" things on amazon had it as one of the must listen to prog albums. It floored me and is still my favorite, mostly because of the big dramatic moments. Then I bought the entire catalog within a few days.

SYL: City. Again, I bought the rest of the catalog within a few days. City is an awesome record, but I think Alien is my favorite. I loves me some chaos.

Actually, the first I heard SYL was on a Judas Priest tribute album that I bought in the mid 90's because it had Mercyful Fate's cover of "The Ripper." SYL's cover of "Exciter" was on that disc too, and it immediately became a favorite.
But sadly I didn't follow up and check out SYL further at the time. Only after another decade did I finally check out Dev and SYL. I haven't been this "addicted" to any artist since when I had a copy of Master of Puppets on tape some 20 years ago.
