The only suggestion I have for the forum is making it more visible on the website, instead of having to go all the way into the "Fans" section, make it one of the tabs at the top or a button on the home page, making it easier for fans to pop right in! :D

Why don't you just bookmark http://www.hevydevyforums.com/forums ? Gets you straight into the action ;)

My suggestions:
  • Better theme, obviously.
  • We have an IRC channel (undernet.org #DevinTownsend) where hardly any members ever drop by :P Would be nice to have a link on the forum home-page which pops up a window/tab with a Java- or Flash based IRC client connecting to the channel? Just to make it more convenient for the not-so-nerdy visitors who are up for a chat. We had a chat on the old forum but it was hardly used, mainly because it didn't really work, IMO
  • Where the hell did the shoutbox go?
  • I have a Greasemonkey (Firefox extension) script that displays a button on the forum page that opens all unread posts in a new window/tab, would be nice to have that 'natively'.

I really don't like the black background. Anything lighter would be better; it just clashes horribly with the light blue content areas.

Do you know much about the protocol for tagging? I'm thinking there might be a way to help DT reach more users by tagging DT with other bands and tagging other bands with DT.

Maybe instead of having a subforum for each album, why not categorize them?
For example, you can have one for your early solo work(ocean machine, infinity, terria etc..), one for DTB( AE, Synchestra), SYL, Ambient(devlab, hummer) and finally a new one for DTP.
I think this would keep the forum from becoming too crowded with subforums.

Just an idea.

Major support for this. That thing produced some hilarious crap. We're Cretins thanks to ideas in the old shoutbox! It was great craic when it was there..

Other than that, I quite like the forum. The chat thing would be a good idea too, though. I have just rediscovered that since Biert's post..

Suggestions for the forum?

2 things would make this forum soooo much better.

1- Quick post box
2- Chat box on the board index!

The login thing is most likely a problem on your end. Are you accepting cookies?

A shoutbox is like a small chatroom, where you can post quick messages for everyone to see at the top of the forum.

It's a little "box" that people can type random messages into.

Wiki: A shoutbox, saybox, tagboard, or chatterbox is a chat-like feature of some websites that allows people to quickly leave messages on the website, generally without any form of user registration (not true in our case).

In their simplest form, shoutboxes are simply lists of short messages, possibly with information about their authors. The page may be automatically refreshed after a certain interval, or polled dynamically in order to keep new messages visible. Older posts are often deleted after a certain number of messages have been written in order to preserve space on the server.

It was great until a little internet troll dumped goat*e pics into it, and of course the forum at that time was not in optimal shape...things kept breaking. So as the pics were deleted from the shoutbox, said shoutbox went on the fritz.

I wouldn't mind having one again.
