Superb album, only downer is the somewhat cheesy lyrics, but I can live with that. And the end of Loser, OMG...It makes me wanna jump around screaming my ass off every time. :D

its a good cd, a little long, but i have to ask.
I love devins growls, especially on terria, they're not deep ala Opeth or Moonspell, but they work. However here, especially at the end of loser they seem high pitched and hard to understand.
Was this deliberate or an off day.
Theyre not bad just at times i cant understand a word being said, it sounded less like rage and more like Michael jackson trying growling.

Just a thought

i know it's not exactly growls, but i do agree. i love devin's singing voice, but the screams just don't do it for me, not that i really mind them or anything. i love everything about dev's music, but i do wonder how he's being voted second best singer on that album when he really doesn't sing on it. i wish he did, but i still think the part he plays on it was a great part for him to play

Not enough Devin on the album...and his vocals seem kinda pushed back into the background...and James LaBrie won't shut up! :D

I sympathize.

It's a strange one. There are a few parts that I like, most of which tend to coincide with Dev's appearances, but it has too much of a 70s "rock opera" feel for me to really enjoy the whole thing. A bit like Def Leppard would do it, were the songs written by Abba's Bjorn and Benny.

I remember a lot of those 70s jobs - God, they were shite!

Devin is being voted second favourite singer on the new Ayreon record, first being Akerfeldt.

NP: Sanctuary - Into the Mirror Black

Yeah, Devin rules that album! He allmost stoled it all. Arjen was clever enough not to let Devin sing more than that.

But Eric Clayton - 15 votes.. that`s 15 votes too much. Mostly his voice just sucks, it`s not dramatic nor operatic, just unnatural. But the album is still awesome(though, this years best is Pain of Salvations BE).

Vote for the album for best prog release of 2004. It needs the support cause it really IS the best album of the year for me.

Hello all,

Well this is my first post on the HevyDevy message boards but I thought I'd make it worthwhile.

Some of you may have purchased The Human Equation DVD version which comes with an hour long documentary on the making of the album.

Essentially what happened was that Devin wasn't keen to sing somebody else's melodies or lyrics - he didn't particularly enjoy doing it on Steve Vai's Sex and Religion either - so his initial answer to Arjen was no.

Arjen then offered to allow Devin to write his own parts, lyrics - the whole shebang really. Devin agreed and eventually Arjen received Devin's tapes which, as per Devin's 'wall of sound' trademark style, it included about 25 layers. I believe his reaction was something akin to an orgasm, as was mine when I first heard Day Three: Pain

Also for those who can't believe Devin wasn't voted best vocalist, I guess it comes down to taste. Opeth have a large fanbase so it's understandable a lot of people would vote that way. Personally I bought the album because it featured not one, not two but three of my favourite vocalists/musicians in Dev, Akerfeldt and James LaBrie. It's a stunning release

Still not sure I've ever heard an album to match Ocean Machine though ...

I don't mean to be rude or disrespectful, but I don't think Opeth's large fan base had anything much to do with this, I actually do think that on that record, Akerfeldt does much better stuff. His moments are the greatets on the album, in my opinion.

Mike also has more of a featured role, where as Dev does more choral landscapes in his songs. Both do great stuff, but Mike just does much more of it. It's all about when Mike growls "You're better off dead!". :D

For me the highlight is definitely Day Three: Pain because I believe it is the best track, although I do love Akerfeldt's vocals as well. He is a freak. There are a number of outstanding performances on that album. As I said it's difficult for me to single out one standout performer.

Speaking of Ayreon; I just stumbled upon a CDS of Loser, that has a different version of the song (it's called "Star One version"). I cant' say I like this version better, but it's a little rougher around the edges and Dev is still there, screaming his throat to pieces in the end of the song...

Just so you dumbass collectors know... :P

they made a video of the star one version. But Devin isn't in it, which is a damn shame...

i guess i shouldn't generalize but i heard a few songs from this and i thought it was the CHEESIEST thing i have ever heard. holy crap did it suck. one of the devin songs were ok.

mikael akerfeld has an amazing voice, definetely up there with devin, and james labrie usually doesn't have that good of a voice even tho i love dream theater
