Hello, I am writing a presuasive text on how modern day music such as some techno, The Jonas Brothers, ect. I need to convince my class that music such as Devymetal is better. My main points will most likely pinpoint the lack of skill/time which a lot of the new artist are doing. Like using auto-tunes to take shortcuts and using the same repetitive beats that do not differ throughout entire songs.

Any help such as points of argument andpersuasive techniques

Statistics, appeals to (sense, money, guilt, passion, etc), Emotive language, Puns, and so on and on.

Just did my English VCE exam, and we had to a language analysis.

Dev writes his own music. Stress that point.
He writes, records, mixes it himself. Very few mainstream bands I know of do that.

I love some techno music and Kraftwerk (the originators of it) are amazing. I wouldn't mistake minimalism and simplicity for lack of time or skill. I'm a filmmaker and sometimes struggle to keep things simple, often to the detriment of the finished article. Simplicity takes a lot of skill and confidence as the artist has far less to hide behind. Anyway, I don't think you can convince anyone of anything - upon listening to the music people either dig it or don't, I don't think you can 'convince' them of it as such things aren't governed by logical argument. Maybe trying to do so or focusing on other musicians perceived lack of skill and time will ultimately turn them off all music!! Not everyone will be a maestro or wants to be.

First off you need to define what you mean by 'better'.

Better for what? If you were DJ'ing at a club with Jeff Mills and Derrick May, would Dev be a better choice than some minimalist Techno? Would SYL be a better choice than the Jonas Brothers on the soundtrack of a Disney kids movie?

I think you are going to have a hard time persuading anyone that one musician/type of music is empirically 'better' than another simply because you happen to prefer it. You could argue that Dev is technically more proficient than the Jonas brothers perhaps, but that does not prove his music is 'better' than theirs any more than John Petrucci is 'better than Brian Setzer or Capuccino of white beans with truffles is better than a ham sandwich.

The problem with trying to convince that someone like Devin is a better artist than someone like The Jonas Brothers is that you don't really have any facts in your favour (popularity).

I don't know... When I was younger, I really did try to convince a lot of people why some stuff I listen is really good, but it hardly ever really worked. The only thing you can really do is play a song and people either dig it or don't. Music is such a subjective thing that convincing that something is better than other is almost impossible.

What I'd say in Devin's favour though is that his albums are a unique experience. With something like the classics Ocean Machine and Terria, it's not just cool melodies. It's the atmosphere of the whole thing, listening to them is like a trip. Hard to explain really, isn't it?

You're fighting a losing battle, due to the ignorance of the human race.
