Just recorded a quick cover of Perpetual Black Second by Meshuggah. Needed a release from the past couple days at work. There are little mistakes but overall its really cool. I did some things a little different, added little leads and improved a nice solo. Let me know what you think!

guitar was my ESP LTD M-207 strung like an 8 string.
Bass is my ESP LTD 5 stringer tuned an octave below the guitar(that would be a full octave below standard bass E! haha)
POD X3 Live for all effects/distortions
EZ Drummer with DFH add on (Sonar 1 snare FTW!)

I was just going to do a solo that was similar to what Fred does. But I decided that a more "fusion" style solo would sound awesome. The other lead part was just kind of a random thing I thought might sound kind of cool...It's still a little loud in my opinion =/

Haha, sweet! Wow, your guitar tone sounds like you're playing a distorted + downtuned bass. Somehow sounds even deeper and chunkier than I remember the song on Nothing. Cool stuff! The snare still sort of punctures my eardrums though. I don't really get along well with DFH's sound to begin with though so it could just be me.

I'm still working on getting a tone that sounds punchy and defined like Meshuggah's for low tunings like this. Plus I didnt want to do just a straight cover! haha Thanks though man.

Rhythm guitars sound pretty close to the original tone IMO. Solo being different than studio one is nothing odd since every live recording of Meshuggah seems to have random variation of original solo .

You have skillz to keep extremely low tuned guitar sounding good. What are you POD's EQ setting by the way? Did you correct it with some fancy EQ plugin after recording?

Nah, no fancy EQ'ing. I used the Boost+EQ stomp model though. It just gives you another set of low/high/mid settings along with another gain setting.

Big Bottom amp is the key to a good tone in low tunings, I've yet to try anything else that stays as clear and has the punch BB has.

If you want to know the numbers for the EQ, I can do that sometime but not at the moment lol

No no, I didn't mean that negatively! I think it sounds really cool. The tone on the original album sounded like a normal guitar being horribly abused to wonderful effect, this sounds more like a massively crunchy bass tone. Both really cool sounds

It's hard to get a tone for low stuff that doesnt instantly sound like a Meshuggah/Bulb rip off

Remixed and re-uploaded this! I think Josiah may be a bit more happy with the snare now! I did take the humanizer off though, I felt it was making the snare sound weak. Either way this version is better in my opinion. The levels of the leads are mixed better and the song as a whole just sounds better, to me at least!

Whew, much better! The snare is still a little snappy for me but that's just my preference, I tend not to like snappy drums in general. Mix sounds good!
