Got inspired recently and decided to have a go at doing something a bit more electronic and gritty-- lots of (down)sampling, atmosphere, etc. Layered everything to hell, tossed in some groove and a dash of guitar, and this is the bastard result:

I've heard it too much to know if it's much good by now, but I'm pretty proud of this one. Has a rather tight, compact feel to it, I think. This is sort of what I imagine Cyberpunk would sound like as a musical genre instead of a literary one.

I am considering putting together Borerer next, although thinking of it now, there's a ton of sampling going on on that record-- unauthorized samples movies and stuff, I mean. Technically I'm not allowed to sell it at all... Perhaps I could make an edited verison.

What sort of sampling?

I am sure it falls into 'fair use'. At any rate, I am sure nobody will notice, or at least not for a very long time. If you get taken to court I will be a character witness for you. Yeah!

As far as I know, laws regarding sampling are pretty strict-- I don't think anything like fair use or parody applies to the concept, unfortunately. I think the only way to legally do it is with permission or royalties paid... something like that. I wouldn't mind some clarification if anyone can provide it, though.

I might go ahead with it anyway. If anyone does notice, I imagine a cease & desist is probably the most I'll get (unless they think I have money).

Oh, and the samples pop up a few times during the album... for example the "Ideas can change the world" in Channel Song is... er, I feel I wouldn't be helping much if I said who it is, but it's sampled from a film. There are a few noises used on the album as well that I believe used to be part of other songs or soundtracks, but they're distorted and processed beyond the point of recognition. Just little one-shot things I use as samples, no sections of songs or loops or anything like that-- I could never bring myself to do that and then say I 'made everything.'

EDIT: Actually, you know what, there is one sampled loop taken from another song in there somewhere. Won't say where, and it's nigh-unrecognizable (mostly used as really slowed-down background noise), so... Hm. This is why I've delayed releasing the album properly for so long.

EDIT 2: Err... two sampled song parts. Damn.

There are lots of grindcore bands that use 2+ minutes of movie samples in their songs, usually as intro's
so i dont think its that much of a big deal
