Devin Cover Regulator

Hi, a few weeks ago i decided to try a cover of Regulator, just to see if it was possible to do a cover of a song by Devin Townsend.
No Vocals yet... I can't sing.

Well i came up with this.

I know it isn't perfect but to me it's more trying to get the feeling of the original than copying the actual sound of it.
But, that's just the way i feel it :)

Tell me what you think!

Sweet! It's different, but definitely Regulator. Awesome guitar tone!

Yes thank you, the guitar tone is generated by a LTD MH-1000 with a EMG-81 to a PODXTpro with a TC-E g-major for the reverb and delays in the effects loop, in stereo offcourse.

The bassguitar is also recorded via de POD

Drums are DFH superior

Synths are Nuendo's Embracer and Absynth.

I'm planning to record a number of songs this summer. Just need to find a good enough singer.

Also listen to this.

So I take it you know what a compressor is then.... I liked it, really nice synth sounds.

^ This. Your cover sounds sweet, but this song is all about melodies in vocals.

I really, really dig the guitar tone and how clean this is

I've done covers of Hide Nowhere and Seventh Wave that I wish had tone and cleanliness like this... but I simply lack the equipment :-(

Sounds really cool. The mix could be better I think, but that's again just a matter of taste. Hope you find someone to sing this one!

Which reminds me I've recorded lame rendition of "Truth" (which I think I'll keep for myself), but sounds shit comparing to this one. I lack the equipment

and skill

indeed, the mix might be a bit too guitar-centered. a bit more power on the drums wouldn't be bad.

but your ideas for synths are great!
overall, the song now sounds like the day after ocean machine, when the cold, rainy night is forgotten and the sun is warming everything again with yellow light. like 5 in the afternoon compared to 3 in the night.

if you get what i mean...

Hi, and thanx for the reactions.

You all have to understand that i did this cover in a hour or 2, just to see if it was possible. Nothing serious yet, and yes all the important melodies in this song are in the vocals, unfortunaltly there isn't anyone close to me that can sing like the dev can.

I'm planning to do more covers (vocals included) from all dev's albums, inc. strapping. Probably 1 cover from every album.

As for the guitar tone, ease up on the distortion/gain, and do not scoup the mids, these are very important, keeps your tone in the signal and helps the guitars cut trough in the mix.

And last but not least on the guitar part, make sure you intonate your guitars correctly, yes even in the Open C tuning.

Tips from you guys regarding mix, drumsound, guitarsound are always very welcome :)

Hey Dave, sounds cool. Ive got a PODXT I use for recording, just wondering what sort of amp sims and stomps etc your using because it sounds better than the patches Ive come up with thus far. Cheers.
