Dooh...forgot to check the forums in the last days...

First of all (again) thx to all of you for the feedback...
Sorry for my time off, but in the last few days I've
been quite busy. I'll put a report on the progress up
here in some hours. Right now I just have to get
some sleep. It's 5 a.m. right now and I just got
home from my rehearsal room, being on my feet for
approx 30 hours now. Gimme some hours of sleep
and I'll be ready to post some news.

Thx.

Soooooo....

It's been a long time since I've reported in, sorry for that.
A LOT of decisions had to be made during the past few weeks...
Demo recordings have stopped, except for drums. I'm still torn
between two options: To record *real* drums and live with sonic
limitations or to use my drum sampler.
Real drums definitely have more groove and organic feeling.
But it would mean HELL of a lot more work for me to handle.
Tweaking drums has always been my special nightmare.
Sooo many things to consider, so many factors affecting the sound.
Wide dynamics-range, overspeaking...you name it...
Using samples would ease things a lot, but it takes
AGES to get sequenced drums to sound "non-sterile".
Well, final decisions on drums will be made tomorrow.

I'm also considering to mic up my amp instead of going direct.
You just get more interaction from your amp when playing it loud,
with controlled feedback and all...

But (though there still some problems to be solved) the whole
thing finally started big-time. Chances are quite good that
"Terraformer" will be finished during the month of July.

By the way...last night, when I was strumming around a little,
I decided to record a quite "special" and different interpretation
of "Detox". I'm mixing it down at the time being.
Hehe, definitely some OTHER way to play this song.
Stay tuned...It'll be online soon as a late easter egg...

Take care!

a question or three...
do you have a drummer whos willing to do the live stuff?
do you have much experience programming drums?
what package do you use?
(and on a different note) are you disappointed that josh homme has ended up doing what he does with qotsa considering the greatness of kyuss?

keep up the hard work. :)

"do you have a drummer whos willing to do the live stuff?"

(hey! are you offering your service to me? )

Lol, I ONLY have drummers! I'm not kidding...I've been playing
the guitar for eight years now and NEVER have played in a real
"band" yet. Reasons are easily found. Drummers don't care what
tuning you play. Guitarists and bassists DO! You see, since I got in
contact with Devins music for the first time I've been tuning my
guitar to A# F A# F A# D (same tuning as Dev uses, just two
steps lower, cause it fits my vocal range better). I love that tuning.
You don't have to think at all. It allows you toplay from your stomach.
Big results with little efford. BUT...Setting a normal scaled six-stringer
to that tuning and keeping it sounding nice is somewhat tricky.
Every guitarist I've met yet refused to try out my setting.
Arguments are usually:

"I'd need stronger strings for that. And it would fuck up my
intonation. Nah, man! No way!"

The funny thing is that no one complains as long as I don't tell
them that I'm playing an alternative tuning when jamming with
other guitarist. Most heard comments then are:

"MAN! What a HUGE sound!"
"How did you play THAT chord?!"
"How can you play THESE solo lines THAT fast and without
having to go up and down the whole fretboard?"

Funny thing...as long as they don't know everything is fine.
But when they start trying to analyze what I'm playing, or,
even worse, try out my guitar, the anger starts.
"What the...! What's this tuning? No fucking chord WORKS!"

That's why I EXCUSIVELY play with drummers only.
Well, okay...Except for those regular jams with other musicians.
And, believe it or not, I'm SATISFIED! When playing with my
drummer Mike, with whom I've been playing for 7 years now,
it feels like we're one fucking unit. He knows EXACTLY when
I'm about to do a break, how long it'll be, how to set the PERFECT
emphasize. We don't even have to look at each other. It's like we're
connected when playing together. Synchronized...
Well, we'll see if he finds the time to do the job.
IF I should decide to mic real drums.

"do you have much experience programming drums?"

Hmm...hard to answer...What exactly do you mean with
"much experience"? I know how to use sequencers and
how to connect them with my samplers. Programming
the basic stuff ain't that hard. But when it comes to
emulate human feeling, rolls, flams and such stuff...
That can be a real pain in the ass...It takes time to
make these little things (that are so fucking important)
sound organic. It also is quite hard not to bore the shit
out of the listener when you programm drum tracks.
All those little variations and gimmicks that come along
naturally when playing drums for real...It's hard not to,
well, forget them when sequencing or don't do them
cause of pure lazyness.

"what package do you use?"
When recording real drums I use Samson mics.
(Yeah, I know...cheap shit...HEY! Anyone wants to
sponsor or endorse me?" )
3 condenser mics (two overhead, one for the hi-hat)
The other five mics are dynamic ones.
(Bassdrum, Snare and three tom mics)
That's right...eight mics only.
Hey, I'm not Rockefeller...

Sequencer/Sampler stuff looks like this.
Sequencer: A stone-age program called "Voyetra Midi Orchestrator Pro"
It WORKS and I got it for free, so what?
The drumsampler I use is Native Instruments' "BATTERY"

Hm, you didn't ask for it, but I'll list up my other gear too.

Recording/Mixing/Mastering: Roland "VS 1824-CD" Workstation.
A pair of Alesis MK1 Active MK II Monitors.

Guitar: Ibanez S 470 K NT with Floyd Rose Trem-System.
(Only two of those were built. A left-hand and a right-hand version.)
Pickups: Bridge DiMarzio D-Sonic (ultra-hot passive baritone humbucker)
Middle Fender Texas Special (high-output passive singlecoil)
Neck Dimarzio Evolution (ultrahot passive humbucker)
That's right, only ONE guitar...For me it's fucking PERFECT!
No need for others.

Amplifiers: Line6 Vetta HD, two matching Line6 4*12 cabs
Line6 Flextone III combo
(the whole shit controlled via a Line6 FBX Floorboard)

Synths: Virsyn "Tera"

I guess that's it...

"are you disappointed that josh homme has ended up doing
what he does with qotsa considering the greatness of kyuss?"

Well...YES! In some way at least. Early Qotsa stuff CAN
kick ass if you're in the right mood, but I think Josh has
been losing it more and more from album to album.
KUYSS was (and still is) a phenomenon unmatched by
any so called "stoner-rock" band. If i may put it like this:
Josh left the "desert" and went on to "small town madness".
Dusty, but lacking the searing heat. He retreated, running
for cover from the rasping sand that once formed him.
Pathetic, eh? But that's how I see it....

keep up the hard work. :)

I will! Thx for your interest and motivation.

Stay tuned!

By the way...SORRY FOR MY ULTRALONG POSTS!
But WHEN I have to say something I'm saying it CLEARLY
and DETAILED!

P.S.

I'm also sorry for my english...It ain't my native language.
I'm from Germany, you see...

I'm flattered... :P

Seems like watching uncountable action-, splatter-, slasher- and horror-
movies in the original english undubbed version payed off in the end!
Same with "Cartoon Network". Argh! Why did they have to scramble that
glorious channel here in Europe!? Gimme back "Cow and Chicken"!
...Gimme back "Johnny Bravo"! GIMME BACK "DEXTERS LAB"!!!

aye, yer inglish aint bad.
although im reading through your posts imagining that your voice sounds like dexter.... :)

i think your right (in a way) about qotsa. i reckon their early stuff was great but theyve just become too poppy/hip/mainstream. its a shame but maybe itll all come good in the end.

as far as offering MY services for the live stuff... well im a guitarist too -therefore we are incompatible (for reasons stated in your posts above)

Ah! The ol' classic -Machine Head- tuning...

Hehe...Dexter INDEED somehow sounds german.
Well, at least as german as native english speakers suppose
germans to speak english. To me he sounds a lil bit more
romanian or russian. Anyway, he's "THE" BOY GENIUS! :D
The best "german-english" I've ever heard is that of ID Softwares'
"Return to Castle Wolfenstein" series.
ID made an EXCELLENT decision when having the RTCW-soldiers
talking english with an ULTRA-hard accent, just putting in some
random german phrases that everyone can understand or at least
guess their meaning. For example, it's not hard to guess what
"Mein Gott!!!" means.

By the way, I decided to go direct for the rhytmh guitar tracks on
"Terraformer". Only the solo-guitars will be miced, for the reasons
I already mentioned. More interaction, controlled feedback.
Some parts live on endless sustaining pinch harmonics that I can't
achive when going direct without risking to blow my near field
monitor speakers to kingdom come. I just purchased two Behringer
Ultra-G D.I.-boxes, cause they have a built in "miced 4*12 cab"-sim
that in my eyes sounds neater than my Vettas' internal cab- and mic-
sims.

C-ya!

Danny

P.S.

About Qotsa...we can only hope! New album is coming!
