I take my influences from lots of Dev (duh), Opeth, Katatonia, In Mourning, ATG, Tool, and I dunno, about 100 other bands. I'm not saying that this sounds like any of that, but that's the sort of stuff I listen to.

This is a demo of a song I wrote last year and recorded all the parts with DFH laying down the beats. After sort of laying off of playing music for a while after my band broke up, this was me getting back in the swing of things and sort of proving to myself I could still write and record something. I've been working with a friend on some more stuff that we're going to record soon but I figured I'd throw this up here and see if anyone actually likes this sort of stuff.

Sounds great! So, that's a demo, are you going to be rerecording it? I very much dig it.

I don't know if it's prog, though, kinda sounded more like some form of melodic death metal, as influenced by bands like Carcass
or Death. Maybe that's just me.

Thanks Cutman, yeah eventually I'm going to re-record it with real drums some song re-structuring and some more riff development. I guess I think it's sort of somewhat progressive from a structure standpoint since I don't really like writing intro-verse-chorus, etc and try and let songs develop and maybe return a riff or two at some point to establish a theme. But yeah, a lot of people think Cynic or Dream Theater when they think Prog, so I think I'll change the title of the post to reflect that.

Well, it's not that it has to sound like Cynic or Dream Theater to be prog, I mean, I consider Opeth prog. But, I mean, Death didn't just do traditional structures, either. I mean, I could be totally wrong, this is just one song. Maybe your other songs are full of experimentation, odd time signatures, or stuff. You might be prog. I just meant that I'm not sure based on this one.

Totally hope to hear more, though. You should make a youtube or something I can subscribe to.

Alright, I'm killing the prog tag until I post something along those lines. Maybe I just WANT it to be prog, ha! To be truthful though, the next song we're recording is actually really doom influenced. Big time My dying bride/insomnium/katatonia influence. Holidays have that on hold for a while. I'll probably post some of my tongue in cheek blackmetal project though. I'll create a youtube channel at some point when there are a few songs to post. Thanks again!
