I'm trying to record guitar onto my computer. I'm running off of ProTools 8 LE and a Digidesign Minibox 2, but I'm trying to run it through my computer speakers. Can that not be done, or do I need to do something in Settings or something? If not, what kind of affordable speakers would the HevyDevy community recommend?

You should be able to run it through the computer speakers, but you might have to loop a cable back from the minibox audio out into your computers line in.
As for speakers, you'd want monitor speakers not any old speakers, for recording music. Preferably active ones so you don't need a separate amp, there is a huge array of options but there is a general consensus that the KRK rokit series is good and affordable.

Yeah, Pro Tools will ignore your computers soundcard and just use the Minibox. Like Dr.Mosh said, if your computer speakers have their own Aux in somewhere, you could connect the output of the Minibox to the Aux in of the speakers. Though, I'd guess that if your speakers do have an Aux in, it'll be one stereo 3.5mm input, whereas the output of the Minibox is for 2 separate 1/4" jacks... so you'd need some kind of adapter.

If you're serious about recording music, then getting some decent moniters, or at least good hi-fi speakers would be a good idea though. I have some old, hand-me-down Kenwood LS-27 speakers with a Kenwood KA-1030 amplifier, and they do everything I need them to do... They'd probably sell in an auction for like, £50 or something... but they sound awesome.

Studio moniters... meh... Unless you can afford to spend a lot... they're not worth the money in my oppinion. Their technical "sound quality" will be very good... very flat... but a friend of mine has some tiny M-Audio ones, but they're so small theres no real bass. Its like putting a pair of earphones on the desk and expecting them to rumble the walls. (Though that isn't what you particularly would want for recording, but you know what I'm getting at)

I've never tried the KRK Rokit's, so I'm not sure what they'd be like... but it'd do you a lot of good to go into a store and try some out with a song or two that you know really well.

And as Dr.Mosh said, yeah... Active moniters would mean you wouldn't need to find a good amp that works with them, saving you some potential hassle.

you shouldn't really have much bass when mixing on monitors, because the mix done on monitors will sound more bass laden on a normal system
