just got my new Epi Les Paul Goldtop. Already got it in open c so its now ready to play.

Dude I hate to sound like a dick. But there are other tunings besides Open C...much more fun tunings.

Nice guitar though, how do soapbar pickups sound with some good distortion?

Learn to play in standard before you go rampant with Open major tunings.

DADFAD is much more fun than Open C Maj.

Not trying to be arrogant. Just tired of seeing Dev-Worshipers running around spouting how they play in Open C so much. Just because Dev plays in it.

yea, DADFAD is open D minor tuning. Very interesting.

If it makes any difference, I heard about Open C the same way Dev did - Through Led Zeppelin. Before hearing Dev, I had heard the John Butler Trio using the tuning, as well as various jazz and blues musicians. Dev may be the first metal musician I know of who uses the tuning, but he's not the only reason I enjoy it.

Just sayin'.

Plus when you're experimenting with alternatives to standard tuning, open is great because you can just go back to the base chord to find your bearings if you get lost.

Dont use a tuning just because Devin does. We all love him, we all love his music. But for the love of god, quit trying to be like him. Be original, be yourself. I bet you any amount of money, he would say the same thing, maybe with the addition of saying "I'm flattered"

I used to play in open C alot earlier, but I'm starting to like D standard now... I blame Gojira. But I'm not writing my own stuff yet so it doesn't matter really. Sometimes I get the feeling that open C is a bit too... easy? Or simple. So standard is fun.

D standard is and probably always will be my favorite tuning. It has its heavy vibe without being Meshuggah-rectum-removing heavy.

Open C (and any subsequent tuning that is basically a massive powerchord) is easy. And I think that's why Dev chose it, it's easy to navigate in a live setting. You dont need to shift your fingers around to play scales and it's just simple to understand.

But again, misses my point!

I don't see why you couldn't play more complex things in open c tuning. I once tabbed a little intro by Shawn Lawn in B F# B F# B F# (open c a half step deeper with a high F#) (see http://rapidshare.com/files/255272756/shawn_lane_-_tri_75.gp5.html) which I think shows some of the potential of this tunings. You don't HAVE to play just powerchords and easy fingerings, another tuning always gives you the possibility to create voicings you couldn't play in Standard.

Right, but I hardly play my 8 string haha. My 7 string is another story. And the number 1 thing I stick by with my 8 string is to NOT write stuff that sounds like a Meshuggah rip off.

Pfef, dude, I know these things. I dint start playing guitar yesterday. My whole point in this is quit using Open C just because Dev does. Dont use a tuning and act like an elitist just because Devin uses it.
