Cool story. (To me, anyway). I saw this band in New Orleans the day after a Mardi Gras drunk fest. Went into a record store after a LATE lunch at Paul Prudhomme's. It was a laid back country and blues record store. On a tiny stage was this band playing. Awesome, awesome old ragtime and delta swing. I bought the CD and got it signed by the guys.

Contemporary Noise Quintet (or Sextet, depending how many of them plays at the moment), cinematic, modern stuff. Seen them live and they were cool:

The Bad Plus - non-electric trio, they're funny and known of jazzy covers of song like Rush's Tom Sawyer or Nirvana's Smells Like Teen Spirit (also seen them live and they were funny):

Pink Freud - just like Contemporary Noise Quintet, they're from Poland, and they're good (and modern too).

I also like Nils Petter Molvaer and his magical trumpet.

Yeah, this stuff's completely un-oldtime, but still worth recommendation.

As for blues - I don't like it at all.

this ones kind off the line of thought here but still relevant to the thread...this ones kind of a genre bender along the jazz-rock line, and soul I guess too. If your patient enough there is a little rock orgasm towards the end.

Listen to his stuff, seriously. He does open C as well, for those who study the tuning.

This guy could have you in an upbeat bluegrass maze of notes and then all of a sudden you snap out of it and are listening to some depressing classical part and don;t even know how the transition slipped by you. Its that good.
