Whats a good pedal to get a shitload of gain out of? i have an Ibanez Tubescreamer TS7 at the moment set as high as possible but i still need more gain. i was thinking of buying a Boss Metal Zone MT-2 or even Hyper Metal MT-3. whats your opinion on this matter guitar geeks?

Metal Zone

Why do you need so much gain is the question I'd ask.

its for my bass and im running it through my fender rumble 100watt. i havent touched the eq on the amp though so im relying on the pedals to do all the work so at gigs i can just use any old amp

Unless you just want an indistinct blurr of crackly fuzz (which you might, I don't know... it can be a cool effect sometimes), I'd try out different pedals/amps/whatever and try to find a tone you like instead of just looking for more and more gain. Usually the key to a killer tone (guitar-wise, at least) is less gain, more mids. I can't count the number of times I've seen amp settings like gain: 10, mids: 0, bass+treble: 10. Unless you're using it for a cool effect somewhere or an intro (or something of the sort), I'd say that's a crime.

It's obviously different for bass, but too much gain is still too much gain. Past a certain point it just starts sounding less like... well, anything, really.

thanks guys. ill make a decision soon eh. im leaning towards a a boss mt-2 or even an mt-3
and ill keep the gain control in mind jos. i cant stand when theres no definition in a bands tone either. cheers

Especially with bass, you really don't want that much gain.

And the MT-2 is a horrible thing in my experience, but it could be perfect for what you want of course. Just be careful :P

will do mate. either way if i get a pedal and im not happy with it ill just sell it and get a different kind. but it seems like the the boss metal models are probably the best and most affordable way to go. line 6 i find far too pricey. i snatched up a line 6 compressor pedal on ebay for $75AUD which is basically nothing comparing to its retail price.

I recently bought a You Dirty Rat pedal primarily for bass distortion and I love the hell out of it.
It gives a really nice dirty tone, somewhat similar to if you'd turned your amp up way too loud and your speakers are distorting.
That being said, I was surprised to find it gives a really weak distortion on guitar and the only thing it's good for is boosting my amps distortion.
But for bass it kills.
http://www.ratdistortion.com/youdirtyrat.htm

as for the cost, i scored mine on the american ebay for about $100 AU
If you haven't been looking at the american ebay recently, start doing it.
The american dollar is weak and the aus dollar is trading at .95 so you can often find musical equipment on ebay for half the price it goes for here in aus.

My mate has a boss Bass Overdrive pedal and it's fairly disappointing. All the boss distortion pedals have a really thin kind of distortion, imo.

ah RATs not my kind of distortion. my mxr pedal makes a much better distortion sound than the RAT too.
