Recording software

I'm looking for some nice, convenient and as simple as possible multitrack recording proggy. I'm using Kristal Audio Engine, which is cool for its price (its free :) ), having full support for VST effects and 16 tracks for recording, being very simple, user friendly and generally working fine.

Actually it's near perfect for me (i'm shit in making music, don't have big needs), except one thing: I can't put together drums in it - process of making drums looks like:

1. tediously click out drums in external program (leafdrums2)
2. export it to wav
3. convert wav from 44 to 48khz (ASIO drivers for my old SB live work only in 48khz)
4. import it to Kristal track.
5. if need_correction then goto 1

Very annoying (and derailing train of thought, if it's good idiom).

So, is there any nice, simple (and cheap) program with feature of sticking some drum sequencer on one of the tracks? Or, even better, with such drum sequencer in package. I guess that have something in common with VST instruments.

Acid, FL Studio and Pro Tools are all good substitutes.

(isn't cooledit VST-free?)

Just found interesting thing - Reaper - supports VST/VSTi and installer weights whopping 3 megabytes. Wow!

I have been using Reaper for quit a while now, and it gets better all the time. For a free package it is extremely powerful, and some of the bundled effects are pretty neat too.

For all my noodlings I use Cool Edit Pro 2.1 (which is doesnt support VST or anything really) and Reaper.

For something that's free use Reaper.

Reaper > Audacity

But Audacity is open source, Reaper isn't! :o

Reaper has a MacOS version coming out soon though, for all you MacFags ;)

Effects in Audacity are useless. No realtime processing = FAIL. What were they thinking?

yeah, how dare they make free software in their spare time which was never supposed to do what you want from it!
It's a wav editor, not a sequencer with realtime VST functionality.

Sure, but it's multitrack editor with VST support after all, says from the distance "record your shit with me, you cheap bastard". It's kinda disappointing when you find that VST plugins lose their beautiful interfaces to bunch of cryptic sliders and take some time to process your sound :(

KAE is also free and VST works ok. Though KAE guys receive some money from licenses if someone decide to use it commercially and pay them, so yeah, they're theoretically on better position.

I was also about to mention those two. I've linked to some recording (and mixing/mastering) by my band done in those two programs (in the "Voices in the fan" forum). With extra plugins though.

Cool Edit is Adobe Audition 3 in the meanwhile though (it also has native VST-support now) and costs a bit more nowadays. Still not as expensive as Sonar on the other hand which I also use.

For the free/open source software route, Ardour is the bee's knees.
