Hey guys,

Made this two days ago, i am wondering what you guys/gals think of this?

http://www.soundclick.com/bands/8/toxic ... _music.htm

it's called "the other side".

It's not done yet, about 50%, and i plan to implement more crazy stuff like more orchestral stuff, synth, vocal samples, piano and choirs...

Let me know what you think, and maybe some tips and hints on structure, sound?...

Thanks.

I would love to let you know what I think, but linkey no workey. I get into the web site and click on your song's hi-fi option, and it says the link is invalid. :?

Oh man... it works here...

Sometimes, once per day, the soundclick site is down, but i have not heard about this problem before... sounds strange, is anybody else having this problem?

Sounded good!

A good foundation there. Intriguing to wonder what it'll sound like with some extra layers therein. 8)

What song/songs inspired you to do the song?

Sounds resonable. GF says it sound like a new syl song so it must be good. :P

I really like it. My only criticism would be perhaps not world class production and a slight lack of originality at this point...but I can see yo working more of your own sound into it - very good work!

slight lack of originality

Near enough everything has already been done so theres not many original things he could have done. Also if thats the syle of music hes into why make something that you dont like yourself. I think originality isnt that important as its very hard to do something original.

Like I said, I really liked it, but for me personally, and remember all judgement of music is purely subjective, I would have liked to hear something in there which would make it stand out a little more - it was intended as constructive criticism for something to improve...and like i said I think it's in there, I just think it takes some time to develop more of your own sound. Again, I did not mean any disrespect by that comment, I intended for my comments to very much be positive overall, my apologies if it did not come across that way. Obviously, none of us can make too much judgement from one song.

Im just saying how could you make it stand out. How would you make it stand out? Dont for get you have to have it original too. not like some random abiaint sound, or just a random bit. They have all been done. I cant think in any way he could do something to the song and make it original.

Exactly my point. Originality is very hard to define and measure in music and it is always down to the invdividual to find their own way of making things their own. I personally felt that there could have been a little bit more of that to this song. If the guy decides he's happy with it the way it is, that's fair enough, it's a great song, but it's just my personal opinion that if I had to fault it, that's where I would do so. It's really one of those truly intangible things that make the difference between a good band and an amazing band

Hey guys,

Thanks a lot for listening!!

optimadam, i guess "relentless" or "devour" from the SYL album probably gave me inspiration, you know, that one string rapid pick... i like that.., also, i am working on an intro right now, bombastic, a lot of choirs (don't have that VST plugin yet :( ) well, you will probably reconize a lot of mr Townsend in that one.. hihi..

And yeah, i get your point Fragility, no need for an apologize, really, originality is a bitch these days! me and my friends used to talk a lot about this subject, just trying to find something in the metal world that could be original, but everything has been done, (country-metal? opera-metal, rap-metal, orchestral-metal, ambient-metal, straight out metal, house-metal) it's not even funny anymore, trying to find that something special...

So what i do now, is just don't try... just create a riff, some drums, maybe it could use synth or orchestral stuff, some choirs, piano, industrial sounds, etc... whatever, just combine and do it..

However, your point on the production is even more interesting for me.. i need to know what people like and dislike on the mix.. it's weird how things can get distorted when i pull myself away from a mix for one day... i start noticing things that while i was mixing, never noticed.. so i consider everyone besides me, as a fresh set of ears that know what should be improved in a mix... let me know what you dislike, and what you would improve...

these things bother me for now:

Mix sounds a bit distorted (too much limiting, compression perhaps?

The drums should be more upfront (i love that SYL kickdrum, and will need to boost my bass in the kick a bit, as well as the volume)

Snare sounds a bit far away, too much reverb. so it seems...

guitars on both sides sound too much alike... will try to EQ them apart more..

maybe a bit too much bass and a little lack of high?

Again, thanks for your time, i could use the advice,,,

Again, I think that original post came off a little too negative sounding! By no means is it a bad mix, very good for a home production...I guess I just feel that it's worthy of a top notch, professional sound if that makes sense....and I can't say I've ever managed to get to that point. I really think this deserves to get to that point, so just keep at it.

I could not play it at anything near proper volume as I am at work, and my speakers here are shit anyway, but dood, I am impressed with what I heard. Keep at it!! The guitar tone was very good and I loved the snare sound. Keep working on it!!

As far as originality goes - just do what you feel the song wants to do. Ever notice that the harder someone tries to be "original" the more they suck ass? Be true to what you hear in your head. It works!!
