I'm obsessed with this song! So powerful.
This is a quick and dirty work in progress as I sit here strumming along to the tune
Anyone have any ideas as to that little lead before the first big chorus? it sounds like a simple run with a slide in it but I cant seem to find it on the fretboard...

intro 4x
C --------------7---------------5--------7---------------
G ---------5--------5----5--7-----4---------------------
C ---0-----------------------------------------------------

big riff 2x
G ------7-------9-------4-------5-------4-------0--------
C ------7-------7-------7-------7-------4-------4--------
G ------5-------5-------5-------5-------2-------2--------
C ------0-------0-------0-------0-------0-------0--------

tag 4x
G ------------------------------7----5-------------
C ------4---4---4---0-----x-----------------------
G ------4---4---4---0-----x--7----5-------------
C ------4---4---4---0-----------------------------

thing 1x
C -------7--6--7--6--7--6--7--9--7----6----7--6----------------
G --------------------------------------------------------9---7--------
C ----------------------------------------------------------------------

verse (big riff)

tag 2
E ------------------------------------------------------------
C ----11--9-------------------------------------------------
G -------------12--11--9--7--5/-------------------------
C -----------------------------------11--12----------------
G ----------------------------------------------9--12------
C ------------------------------------------------------------

chorus
G --------5-------9-------0-------4--------7--------9-----7-----5------4------0------
C --------5-------9-------0-------4--------7--------9-----7-----5------4------0------
G --------5-------9-------0-------4--------7--------9-----7-----5------4------0------
C --------5-------9-------0-------4--------7--------9-----7-----5------4------0------

That's all I've got so far. I'll add more as I figure it out.
Thx for reading! Comments, corrections, and criticisms are all welcome!

EDIT 1
- fixed thread title (d'oh!)
- fixed tag riff
-added lick (tag 2) before chorus

Nicely done. It's an excellent start and has most of the meat of the song. You may want to fix the thread title, as the song is actually called "Midnight Sun"

OMG I can't believe I did that.

Thanks for catching it!

Tuned down the guitar for once, I hate open tunings as you just can play stuff from one band then :/.

I like it so far! If you want to submit it somehwere I'd just make the rhythms etc. a bit more apparent and state when notes should remain played. At least I think there are some for example in the intro, although it's hard to make out the guitar there. I feel like the last 7 still rings while it is supposed to be played again...so I have the feeling the guitar is playing something slightly different there, but it's hard to make out behind the dominant melody you transcribed.

Also alternations are missing so far, for example "big riff x2" is not actually played twice because the last chord remains the one before that in the second run.
Same goes for the "tag x4", which ends with a

C---------------------0------
G --------------------0------
C ------4---4---4---0-------
G ------4---4---4---0------
C ------4---4---4---0------

I think. I suck at making out distorted guitars :/. You probably know that anyway, people will complain about stuff like that though :D.

Your tag 2 lick sounds fine I think, it just contains a lot of slides that aren't mentioned yet. I *hate* tabbing stuff like that as you listen to a few milliseconds over and over to get that damn sound right, haha :D.

Overall nice work. Sounds like it would make an awesome acoustic version as well.

Agreed on all points Chris. Especially on tabbing out those little leads. Lick 2 took longer for me to get than the rest of the parts put together! Figuring out leads is a real weak point of mine, my background is drums so the rhythm comes much easier to me.
I'm working on an official tab for UG and it'll have the rhythms and alternations as best as I can hear them.

Regarding the intro, I can hear the bass playing underneath and a ride cymbal following the main melody. I think you're right that there is something else going on but its hard to hear.

Thanks for your help. :guitar:

Haha, I find the opposite true actually - I always have trouble getting chords exactly right. On lead guitars it just gets hard when it's starting to get really fast and in this case especially I found the big up-slide kind of irritating sound-wise.

Anyway, good luck with the rest! I'm always hestitant in doing tabs for albums I just bought as it takes the magic out of the things for me often times. In this song specifically, I was always totally caught by the "tag" part, and now that I know how it's played, the magic is going away! Uuugh
Let me know when you finish it, I can give you a 5 star rating then.

Are you still working on this tab?

I'm getting quite obsessed with this song as well now with my acoustic, so I wanted to get the "You bought the wonderful dream..." outro as well.

My approach looks like this:

Code: Select allGuitar 1:
e----------------------------------------------------|
c----------------------------------------------------|
g-------0---------------5---------0---------------7--|
C----0-----0--0-4-5------------0-----0--0-4-5--------|
G--------------------5-------------------------5-----|
C-5-------------------------5------------------------|

e---------------------------------------------------|
c---------------------------------------------------|
g-------0---------------9--------0---------------5--|
C----0-----0--0-4-5-----------0-----0--0-4-5--------|
G--------------------5------------------------5-----|
C-5------------------------5------------------------|

Guitar 2:
e----------------------------------------------------|
c----------------------------------------------------|
g-------0---------------5---------0---------------7--|
C----0-----5--0-4-5------------0-----5--0-4-5--------|
G--------------------5-------------------------5-----|
C-5-------------------------5------------------------|

e---------------------------------------------------|
c---------------------------------------------------|
g-------0---------------9--------0---------------5--|
C----0-----5--0-4-5-----------0-----5--0-4-5--------|
G--------------------5------------------------5-----|
C-5------------------------5------------------------|

Two versions because I somehow hear both notes at one point, but it doesn't seem like it's played like a chord...two guitars? I'm really not sure...It's all flowing together so much in the mix that I find it difficult to make out specific notes.
Left the 9 because I know Devin likes to stretch, so that one would be probably more correct than the 4 on the c string above...

Any opinions about that? Have you maybe been able to make that part out better?

E: Goddamit forum! I need a horizontal scroll bar for code snippets...

I know I'm late to the game. I'll help out a bit either tonight or tomorrow when I get home. These chords are pretty dense, but I have a good ear for this type of thing. There are a lot of Minor 9's in here...

I recorded an unplugged version I did and am trying to harmonize my vocals. I am not a singer and this is way out of my range but the guitar is right. Also the video sync is way off.
