I'm thinking of starting afresh with my recording setup so i was wondering what you're all running, what you like about it, what you don't......

I'm using a Presonus Firestudio-Tube with Cubase 6 here. For monitoring i use (and love) my Yamaha MSP-10 Studio monitors. The interface ist fantastic for drumset-recordings (16 Inputs) or complete band-rehearsals. It sounds fantastic, specially the two tube-preamps! The guitar-sounds for my own songs mostly come from these freeware (but great sounding) VST amp-modelling plugins: http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/

I just burned a lot of cash on a new studio. I have not been able to put it all up yet because I need a new desk...

Useig Logic since v7 and I love it. Will never use anything else as a main DAW but Ableton Live is great too. I will buy it later. It is great for some tasks that other DAWs lack. Running on a Mac Pro Quad 2.93 GHZ

Just bought a Apogee Duet interface. Cute little thing :D Very handy. But I will replace it with a Apogee Ensemble later this year. Need more than 2 IO. Sound quality is very good. Mac users should check out Apogee.

Using Pod Xt Pro (with all model packs and PoDFarm plugins) for guitars. Used it for 6-7 years. I also recently bought a Digitech 2120. All good if you are unable to use or record with real amps. The 2120 sounds way better (own tread about it in here)

Bought a SHURE SM7b microphone. Recommended! I think Dev use one of those on the video of him recording vocals for Supercrush.

Dynaudio BMA5 mk2 monitors. have not tried them yet :(

I got control surfaces from Euphonix yesterday. They are owned by Avid now. Got the MC Control and the MC MIX. Very extravagant of me..I know. But cool stuff.

Using some other software

Software Instruments: Native Instruments Komplete, EZ Drummer, QuikQuak and Korg Legacy on demo trial (looks like I have to $$ for that one too).

Effectplugins

I have all Waves plugins but I deactivated most of them. I use Waves SSL 4000 collection a LOT. Also have the NEVE emulations, the API series, CLA 2a, 3a and 76. The H-Delay and Doppler plugs. Recommend people to download the complete pack. try them out for some months. I did, and after that I found the ones I liked and needed. Most people wont need all of them. Find your Waves plugin...

Have all plugins from Softube and they rule the planet...

I use Lexicon and Audioease AltiVerb for reverb.

Also use AudiEase Speakerphone a lot, very fun to use!

And I use the Flux plugins whenever I need a more modern sound or precision tools (not that often). I recommend Sonnox Oxford for this purpose too. They are great.

Own some hardware synths/sampler. Play PRS Custom 22 guitar and poke around.

Not much negative to say about it though. I have a fear of killing creativity with to much gear. Done that once before...

I have a pretty cheap setup, but it works ok... records at 96khz 24bit. just bought a Creative X-fi xtreme gamer. I'm running guitar through a vox tone lab. and recording with cooledit pro. so very cheap setup, but gets the job done.

You asked for positive and negative..

I can add to the Pod series. I think the Pods itself sound better than the PodFarm plugin. It might be in my head though. It is supposed to be the same algorithms...

I forgot to mention that the Peavey Revalver is the best ampsimulator I have tried out. I have to $$$ that one as well. Tested the Overloud stuff and it seems to be good too.

And if you have the money DSP cards should be a part of your setup. Solid State Logic and Universal Audio is great. I wanted to buy a SSL Duende (expanded to 128) but I have to wait. Ok, it should not be as in "you need it". One can do perfectly well without too.

Line 6 Toneport UX1 (now the Pod Studio UX1) running Pod Farm 2 along with Redwirez impulses into Logic Pro 9 with two Mackie MR5 reference monitors.

Very minimal, but it works surprisingly well.

I'd love to try Revalver out, but I just don't feel like paying for it...(No good torrents for mac either lol)

No, I have only tried it in demomode. There is no crack for OSX that I know of.

Ok, there is a crack for the osx version of ReValver. I wont post where to get it or use the forum in any way to help anyone getting it. I supose links to ilegal files is against the rules. But it is out there. Should not be hard ti find.

I added a Clavia Nord Lead 3 to my setup. I owned one once but had to sell it 4 years ago. At last I have it again. Was part of the plan since I sold mine ;)

LePou (http://lepouplugins.blogspot.com/) recently released several guitar amp simulators for OSX. I've been using the rectifier one (lecto) quite a lot lately, and fom my limited experiences I'd say it feels on par with Revalver, and better than Guitar Rig or Pod Farm, but entirely free!

My recording setup is my Macbook Pro, a Presonus Firebox, a Shure SM57, and an M-Audio Prokeys 88sx. Very simple, but oh so versatile, and lets me do pretty much everything* I could want :)

edit: * except record drums
