This year has seen a rise in racism and activity by fascists across Europe. At the elections, the fascist British National Party picked up half a millon votes after gaining two seats in the European parliament last year, while the racist thugs of the English Defence League have staged 29 demonstrations, trying to stir up anti-Muslim racism – Islamophobia – in towns and cities across the country.

In Luton, Stoke and Dudley, the EDL has gone on the rampage, attacking Asian people, places of worship, homes and shops.

But the overwhelming majority of people hate racism and fascism. It’s time to show our opposition to the racists and fascists – and our commitment to a multiracial, multicultural society.

UAF, our sister organisation Love Music Hate Racism and the Muslim Council of Britain have called a national demonstration in central London for Saturday 6 November. We are planning to end the march with a carnival, where we can celebrate our unity and diversity together – with top artists and musicians.

This is your chance to stand up and show that the fascism and racism of the BNP and EDL have no place in our society.

I've been watching this build in the EU lately on this not-so-surreptitious wave'o'racism (the banning of the burqa, for example is something that I can't possibly fathom, especially for the way we Yanks get criticized for every little thing we do). Just as we've seen in America with the fervor and vitriol being spat out over the planned mosque in Manhattan.

What it gets down to in the end, regardless of what you believe (I for one worship the great space coyote), people are people and to deny them rights to practice what they so choose in western society is hypocritical and downright echoing of the fucking crusades. As someone who comes from Jewish family, I actually find this kind of bullshit absolutely obscene and I hope with every cell of my body (I'm not kidding, reading this kind of crap gives me physical pain) that the EU can come to its senses, just as I hope and struggle with how I feel about my homeland every day.

We are a global community now and have been so for a long fucking time, despite claims otherwise. These borders that divide our tribes are only concepts, and when it comes down to it we all want the same things in life.

Andn Octillus - Yeah. Your post pretty much sums it up. It's a total mess in Europe at the moment, but [in relation to America being critised] it's much easier to point out someone elses problems, than admit and sort your own. Quite ridiculous.
