Talk about whatever you want to here, but stay correct

Earlier this week there was some discussion in the media about removing all the mental images from beer commercials.
What that means basicly is no people doing anything, only the product and some info.

Then there was also this little vote held by a radio station. 85% of the people asked wanted to keep the beer commercials the same. For me that was somewhat annoying and confusing. If the people could decide on this one, they'd choose to get bombarded by... well... by lies to make them buy something.

Why? They gave reasons like the beer commercials are funny or have the best looking women on them. Even all my friends thought the same.

This bugs me a lot.

How about you guys? If you could, would you "ban" advertising?

Can't say I watch all that much TV, either, but advertising is, in general, irritating bullshit.

Personally, I wouldn't object to the ads staying the same because if they change, they won't stop being irritating bullshit; they'll just be bland, humorless, and obnoxious. It's not like the ads actually work (I'm sure they do on some people)--I've never seen a Budweiser ad and then suddenly wanted to go get hammered. I'm not one for drinking, so it doesn't bother me one way or another.

I don't think there should be censorship of any kind of media--internet, television, radio, anything. I don't give a fuck about the morality of kids, and if parents don't want them to see something (hint: they're seeing it already), they should use parental controls. :D

i just did 2 years of advertising. when it comes to beer commercials they usually just create the most entertaining ad possible instead of having any form of selling initiative to it. its just there to keep brand recognition up (keep the brand fresh in the mind of someone). if beer companies advertised in an informative or educational way i assure you theyd sell more beer anyway.

i think also you have to realise people have minds of their own too and if advertisements lie, people should be smart enough to make up their mind about if it was true. its relatively harmless. i could give you case studies that are much more horrific than a few lies in tv ads.

I do agree that there is waaaaaaaaaay too much advertising these days. They're sticking logos and brand names everywhere.

Interesting take on advertising you have there...

I really don't care how much beer they sell and that wasn't the point. I just found it confusing that people want to watch commercials so much that they'll actually defend them.

Ads or not the amount of beer sold a year stays the same. Ad's only matter when it comes to choosing the brand.

Yup that's all true.

Last sentence is kinda off-topic don't you think? Somebody tells you to stop smoking but you won't because someone else is on crack. Crappy metaphora but you get the point.
Nevertheless I'm still curious to know what you mean. Hit me :D

I don't have a problem with advertising, except when it's forced on people (spam, spyware, pop-up ads that cover the whole page in an attempt to get you to pay attention to them).

Some adverts can be entertaining/funny, and I'd prefer to have advertising in its current form, than have freedoms infringed.

Yeah, this is pretty much my view. If you don't like something, then you don't have to watch it.

There's a big debate going on in France right now, cuz' the gov' has decided to scratch publicity from public TV channels. To make it better says the gov', safe from audience wars, to turn it to crap say the opponents, and bring more audience to the private owned channels (which are part of corporation whom CEO are friends of the president). While it may be similar to the BBC at first, the TV licence in France is only 110-120€ or something, while it's about 190-200€ in the UK.

Anyway, I don't mind a bit of publicity, but like everything with a bit to much of freedom (or not enough control) they abuse it. I'm watching hockey games and you've got ads every 10 minutes, so annoying. By watching these one could think US people (or at least hockey fans) are just guys driving fat ass pick-ups, eating only ham and cheeseburgers and subways, drinking beer in front of 5 feet large screens, enjoying lawnmowing on their mini tractor, all that paid by credit, except the subway maybe (ok, tell me it's not true).

And I can't fucking stand the car ads. Damn there are so many it's like people buy a new car every freaking day. And they're trying to be creative and all. Wow look it drives so smoothly, even the clouds make way for that car and the water takes the shape of a horse and IT'S JUST A GOD-DAMN FREAKING CAR OK ?! GET LOST ! I'LL TELL YOU WHEN I NEED ONE IF I EVER CAN AFFORD SOMETHING ELSE THAN A SECOND HAND ONE!!! duh. Oh I forgot, NO IT'S NOT A GREEEEN CAR, IT'S JUST A SLIGHTLY LESS GREY CAR, GET THE DIFFERENCE ?!
I hate the phone/internet ads too, as if you're gonna get hand in hand with everyone in the world while you don't even talk to your neighbour...

So yeah, I don't like advertising. Some are funny indeed, some look cool, artistic or creative (the Citroen robot for example, it was cool at first, but got on my nerves like all the other car ads), but most suck. Stupid ads should be forbidden. I got pretty much "mind shielded" to advertisement on TV, but "passive advertisement" (I mean, things written on packages and all) should be drastically controlled and limited, those example of Nestle are pretty good indeed.
The "green cars" are another good example (there are even green yacht, or green plane, WTH ?!)
Or pickles, most often you'll buy some "tradition pickles" or something, or "whatever brand pickles, since 1850", "hand picked", yeah sure, hand picked in Bangladesh by cheap labour, bastards.
