Talk about whatever you want to here, but stay correct

My most recent gripe with these so called music 'journalists' (note: anyone with a computer and an internet connection) are discrediting musicians because of their ignorance.

Example, an album review for a band I worked with claimed the drums were programmed because it sounded too good to their uneducated ears. That completely takes away from the skill and work the drummer puts into his craft.

I have no problem with programmed drums, it suits certain types of music or is good for writing demos if you're without a drummer, but too many 'smart' journalists end up disrespecting musicians by saying "oh, that must be programmed" or "Oh, that's had the pro tools treatment" or whatever.

Sorry just needed to rant

Why? I consider "this guy is a machine" to be compliment for a drummer.

but they arent saying "this guy is a machine", they're saying "this isnt even a guy" its insulting in that....the reviewer believes that the named drummer cant actually play that well, and had to use pro tools to clean himself up, or was replaced entirely by a drum machine.... it completely disregards the hours/days/months/years that human being spent sitting at his kit, being the best he/she could be...and says instead "the drummer cant be that good ....it must be programmed".

I'd be rightly insulted.

Mind you...if phrased as "<Drummer's name> is an absolute machine, kicking arse on those skins" ...then thats a whole other story

Exactly. If it was a compliment, it was certainly back handed.

He is a machine, and drums up there with the best, but the way the review was written hacked me off. I'm gonna see if I can find the review, just a sec ...

Still looks ok to me if drummer is that good that reviewer can't believe it's human. I'd de proud if I'd be him :)

"drums are … almost too good which leads me to believe they may be programmed, especially the double kick as some of that is immensely fast & totally flawless"

Maybe I over reacted but I have a person connection with the band, so it hacks me off

Also I sent them a video of him doing his takes in the studio to proove it was actually him drumming, but got no response.

Geez, couldn't you tell it's Jason the Pitchshifter guy? :)

Yeah, reviewer has quite narrow knowledge, then. I thought he's rather well known drummer. I mean, Jason, not reviewer.

I don't think he's that well known. Pitchshifter aren't as known as they used to be a few years ago. All these journalists know are bands that are still huge, or all these new bands like Fallout Boy and Trivium and crap.

That wasn't my point. I hate journalists who discredit great musicians because of their ignorance at their ability, while trying to come off as 'smart'.

If you want some positive criticism on that drummer, whore him around at RVP's forums, I'm sure people there will appreciate his skills and style ;)
