"Progress" bars that keep resetting themselves?! The Windows Live Messenger troubleshooting thing has one, and it just keeps going back to the beginning. The bar isn't going to TELL you how much is done, in fact, it's not going to tell you ANYTHING, apart from the fact that it's progressing, in which surely a flickering "Progressing" light would be sufficient.

The same thing happens in CCleaner. Great app, but that annoys the hell out of me.
I think it must be because the application doesn't actually know how far along it is, so it can't give a percentage.

On the subejct of percentages..it's even worse when it gives you a percentage or time that is completely innaccurate!!

It amuses you while you wait! It makes you feel like the program is actually doing something and making progress, when in reality the little electronic beasty-kins that make your computer go round and round are probably out the back having a fag. The illusion that everything is working well!
Trust me, if there was no endlessly refilling blue bar then you would have smashed your head off the desk repeatedly instead of watching the screen.
Yaarp.

Computers can't count. The "Estimated Time Remaining" things are always off.
Progress bars are, besides for showing progress, also a form of "activity feedback" to the user. As long as it's moving, you can tell things are happening. As soon as it stops moving, it's time to kill (the process of course). Humans have trouble with non-feedback things. When pushing a button, we want a "click" and a light to go on.
