I can see Bill Hicks' point and on a certain level I agree with him, but I think it's pretty pathetic if you can only write good music when on drugs. Drugs are bad (mmmkay) for you, there's no doubt about that. This is going to sound a little hippie-like, but you can also be inspired by life itself in songwriting, love, friends, current events, daily life, even a nice warm day in the sun.
The argument about non-drugs written music being all about music theory seems a little redundant. I hate drugs (except for the occassional coffee and beer), and never write according to theory. I'm guessing 95% of all musicians write according to their feeling, and what feels right. Even bands like Meshuggah or Dream Theater, whom people say only can play and write technical music, also come up with riffs and chords, which sounds nice to their ears.
As for drugs themselves, I hate 'em. You'll say "But Archetype, what about weed, that isn't bad for you, right?". I live in Amsterdam, so I'm confronted by stoned people everyday, and I'll have to agree with Bill Hicks again that stoned people are much less dangerous than drunk people, who cause a fight or whatever. On the other hand, when under the influence of drugs, you change, most of the times you don't know what you're saying or doing anymore. You don't need drugs to party, first of all, and besides that, it has clinically been proven drugs damage your body in one way or another. I'm guilty as charged, because beer and coffee are both poison too.

Having gotten this off my chest I leave you with Bill Hicks quote, which I also happen to agree with: What business is it of your's what I do, read, buy, see or take into my body as long as I don't harm another human being whilst on this planet?

Do what you want, be happy, but keep it to yourselves.

(Some) Drugs seem to improve creativity, so 'the music industry' probably has a more positive view on it than 'the outside world'. Although it has of course also claimed many victims in the business.

if you need to keep taking drugs to make what someone elses idea of music is, you don't need to be making music, in my opinion

If an artist does drugs, that's their problem. If it gets in the way of their music, then that's everyone's problem. I'd rather they didn't do any drugs, but it's not like any one of us could stop them. It is good to hear about the Dev coming clean for Synchestra and onward, though.

That's hilarious. Not.

Well, Dev did drugs. And his music's not half bad, eh? ;)

Other than that, I dunno what artists I listen to have dabbled in drugs. I couldn't really give a shit. It's their choice and their lives. If it makes their music better, great! If it puts them completely off the rails and they cease making music all together, ah well. You can't really tell from the music in most cases whether or not the person/people are all stoned off their game..

Dev also did some albums without drugs. Ocean Machine (therefore probably HAARHT), Synchestra, The New Black, The Hummer, Ziltoid The Omniscient are all 'clean' records. Not bad either.

I haven't heard The Hummer or Ziltoid yet but those others are IMO a lot clearer. 'Better' song structures and so on. Btw it's amazing that a song like Death of Music was made sober.

I guess it depends on the drug. I think we've all seen the damages to musicians when too many drugs are used.

id say it can affect different people in different ways basically
but its a bit unrealistic to dismiss drug as a creativity tool

but the bottom line is still the music, and at the end of the album, i dont care if the artist did drugs or not, what i will care is if the music is good or not

Devin also made City without dabbling in drugs.

Anyway, I don't care if musicians use drugs, up to them.

I can appreciate that for example, taking a smoke might take a musicians writing to a different perspective but really you can either write a decent song or....you can't

I prefer my music theory based shit without the fisting, rimming and blowjobs.
