Any Zorn fans here?
I really want to get into his work, but he's got a trillion albums to choose from. I was wondering if any of you can give me any recommendations?
I figured I'd start with I.A.O and The Gift. Good choices?

John Zorn rocks. Just got "the complete works of Naked City" box....total badassness. I guess you can start off with the "Naked City" album. Most of the Naked City stuff is pretty damn good imo. I´m gonna let someone else have a go at this....I´m no expert really hehe..

I like him. Can't really listen to most of his work very often, but I do like it.
LOVE the chamber music.

I appreciate his influence on experimental music but haven't gotten into any of the 10 or so albums of his I've heard :\

Good thread, I was going to ask the same thing. His sax playing on Hemophiliac (with Mike Patton and Ikue Mori) is out of this world. I had initially written off that album as a limited-edition gimmick, but after several listens I'm finding a lot of interesting stuff on it...
In recent news, Zorn composed and directed two CDs by a project called Moonchild, consisting of Patton on vocals, Trevor Dunn on bass, and Joey Baron on drums. Seems like a good project for Fantomas fans...

Yep, Moonchild and Astronome are the newest projects with Patton....not an easy listen but worth hearing if you like that kind of stuff. Other Zorn albums i like: "Spillane" and "The Gift" plus a bunch of the Masada stuff....dunno what tho..hehe
Or maybe Stephen Colbert can give some advice?

Like FZ, all Zorn is really different. Soe of it seems a little throwaway but hey...
I do like IAO (Patton is on Black), I also really like the filmworks Xu Feng and a whole bunch of Masada stuff. Dig in and don't get duscouraged if you don't dig it. Just move on.

Just got IAO and The Gift and both are excellent! I'm kinda surprised how easily I was able to get into them. I think I'll get taboo & exile and music for children and complete the romance series. And then its off to Naked City!

What other music do you like? What made you take an interest in John Zorn? Just curious...
