...picked this idea up off Fulgore in the shoutbox (credit where credit is due)

I dont know about all of you, but i discover a lot of good new music from what you guys and gals are recommending on these boards - and not just metal/rock. There have been many great albums released this year, a few disappointments too, but i dont wanna hear about those.
this year i have came across more musically diverse bands than ever before (thanks in part to myspace), but im sure there must be a few more hidden gems out there. :D

so with only a few weeks left in 2006, i reckon its about time we get this off our chests.

heres a few to start it off, in no particular order...

DTB-Synchestra - epic soundscapes, rockin tunes, a veritable musical journey.
Mastodon-Blood Mountain - these guys just get better and better, this album is frikken intense.
Isis-In the Absence of Truth - more of the same good stuff from one of my favs.
Voivod-Katorz - if you havent heard this, i strongly recommend you sort it out... now. its rocks.
Celtic Frost-Monotheist - a fantastic comeback album from one of the most influential black/death metal bands ever. *ooh!*
Peeping Tom-s/t - interesting idea from Mr Patton. im not a fan of hip hop or beatboxing :? , but i grew to love (most of) the songs.
SYL-The New Black - never has cheese and metal been combined so effectively.
Sepultura-DanteXXI - it surprised me just how good this was, Convicted in Life for Song of the Year?
Tool-10,00days - great album, great production, great drumming. great.

...so whatcha got?

who would ever guess i would start with

DTB - Synchestra
SYL - The New Black

i can say those are 2 albums that are going to have TONS of influence in me for a long long time :D

other than that

Meshuggah - Nothing ReIssue: sounds even more amazing than the first one

Disillusion - Gloria: it's new, it's fresh, it's over the top at some parts, but it's a fucking masterpiece. Also one that's gonna influence me a lot

Ozric Tentacles - The Floor's Too Far Away: synthprog/craziness at it's best, right here on 2006, who would guess

UneXpect - In a Flesh Aquarium: struck me as the most crackheadish music ever, so i love it

Tool - 10 000 days: it's beautiful, it's moving, it's Tool still sounding like Lateralus, gotta love it

and finally:

Battleheart - Terror on the High Seas: best home brewed production i've heard so far, and made by a friend, so it's gotta get a special mention

Everyone around here - HDAS: just fucking great, isn't it? :D

those are the ones that come to my mind right now. I'll edit later on if i remember anything

This is gonna be incomplete, so I'll keep re-editing my topic

The Devin Townsend Band - Synchestra
I'm not sucking up to my favourite musician, obviously. This literally is one of the best albums released this year (Leaked and recorded last year). It's just so goddamn huge, and soothing to listen to once your tired out from a days stressful work, or from just being emotional. I don't have the attention span to listen to it from start to end :P But I have listened to all of it at one point, and I love it. For such a good album, I don't feel its getting the recognition it deserves

Tool - 10,000 Days
Pretty good CD, althought I favour Aenima over any other Tool CD. But Im gonna admit, I love progressive songs, but Wings pt.1 and 2 are the biggest borefests I ever listened to. But there-after the album becomes interesting again.

Strapping Young Lad - The New Black
I was expecting anything from this album, since Dev described it as a 'fun album'. I think its awesome, but songs like 'Hope', 'Fucker', and 'Monument' get old easy. On a side note (and not to sound like a douche :P) I have trouble listening to this since I listened to the leaked copy during the day of my Grandma's funeral. That and my ex-gf is all I can think about sometimes while listening. Oh well, enough of the Drama

Tenacious D - The Pick of Destiny
It's short as hell, but it's just as good as their first one. 'The Final Showdown' with Dave Grohl as "The Devil" (Also in the movie) is kick ass too.

Deftones - Saturday Night Wrist
I really wish Deftones could be like they were back in the day, but judging by Chino's scream now, I think this stuff is more of the direction they should go to. It's a great mellow CD with alot of aggression here and there.

To be continued..

Its been a good year except for The New Black and the new Zero Hour album. Also the new Isis was yawn-inducing, but I didnt like them much in the first place

my top 10:

1. Converge - No Heroes (by a lot...pretty much the only reason I bothered numbering them :P)
2. Tool - 10,000 Days
3. The Mars Volta - Amputechture
4. Hammers of Misfortune - The Locust Years
5. The Paper Chase - Now You're One of Us
6. Aereogramme - My Heart Has A Wish That You Would Not Go
7. Red Sparowes - Every Red Heart Shines Towards The Red Sun
8. Estradasphere - Palace of Mirrors
9. Canvas Solaris - Penumbra Diffuse
10. Stolen Babies - There Be Squabbles Ahead

I'll have to listen to the Twisted Into Form album though because I didn't know that was out :O. Also lots of honourable mentions like Unexpect, Arsis, Martyr, Head Control System, Mastodon (although I really don't hear why everyone is so madly in love with this), Intronaut, Kayo Dot, Synchestra, Sikth, Yakuza, Dysrhythmia, Muse, Ludicra... very good year overall.

WOW it really is hard to believe that Synchestra is a 2006 release, I feel like I've been listening to it forever! I think that and Lamb of God's Sacrament are two of the best for sure. TNB too...
