A new topic for the sake of having one!
Mostly I just couldn't find one like it (or didn't look hard enough; meh).

Pretty self-explanatory - what's your favorite genre and why? Any sub-genres to supplement? Can't choose just one? Any bands in particular to justify your response?

Go nuts. Mine's thrash, as it was my first love.

I also enjoy symphonic and folk metal, but I find myself liking less and less bands in those genres. It has AWESOME potential, but it just isn't happening (that much).

I suppose I should specify that, by progressive metal, I refer acts like to DTP (duh), Pain of Salvation, Arjen Lucassen, and a lot of prog/death crossovers (Textues, Opeth, Ghost Brigade). Not so much Dream Theater and such.



In Symphonic metal I went from liking pretty much all of them to: Nightwish, Within Temptation, ReVamp, After Forever, Kamelot and probably a few more.
As for Folk metal: Eluveitie, Equilibrium... and the recent Wintersun album I suppose. But none of these are major favourites of mine.

I think it just occurred to me just how little I listen to metal nowadays. D:

I voted Death Metal...but then I quite like things that are more technical/modern and 'death metal' suggests something older and more traditional.

Labels dont always work. We all probably love Devy/SYL...but a lot of that isnt so easy to label.

I realize the myriad of add-on labels and sub-genres metal has these days might cause some conflict, but still, there's always a root genre.
Besides, if your favorite one isn't on the list, that's what Other is for.

PS, I probably don't need to say this, but if your favorite is essentially what's on there but under a different name, just go with the equivalent. Makes it easier.

Fairy muff. Then I think the root genre of my favourite metals is probably Death Metal. So that works!

Well, I voted Black Metal as that is really what I listen to the most it seems. But I probably listen to Grindcore just as or almost as much. And I love Industrial Metal. I seem to listen to Prog Metal less and less, it seems. Used to be one of my favorites...and I'm not talking Devy as his music ain't Prog Metal in my opinion, it's Devy Metal...but nowadays it bores me to hear music where bands try to out-prog each other without writing actual good songs. Whatever happened to good song writing. Anywhoo, there you have it...

The truth is there are bands I like and bands I can't stand in every subgenre, but if you keep classic heavy metal 1975-1982 and ignore all of the hair shit, I'm pretty in love with that era.

I have to go with progressive. I recently purchased all 9 albums from Threshold and been pretty immersed in those, although when I'm at work I listen quite wide range of metal from mp3. I used to be pretty genre restricted, all about "traditional" heavy metal (Rainbow, Black Sabbath etc) and clean vocals and such but now it's just what sounds good is good. Age brings wisdom I guess...

These days it's pretty much band's vocalist that makes or breaks the deal for me when searching new bands, not so much the genre. And by this I mean vocal performance in general, not so much the style itself. For example I got Meshuggah's Obzen, but singers monotone voice is really tiresome to listen and actually I have only one song from that album ripped to my work player (yes, it's Bleed). But take Russel Allen and I can listen Symphony X or more straightforward Adrenaline Mob all day long. Other great example is Mikael

^It's only boring when you talk about how one genre is more talented, skillful, accessible, etc. than the others. I prefer to discuss how you relate to and feel listening to it. A broad subject, I must admit.
Wankery: I can listen to thrash at almost any given moment, as I find it's the one I have the most fun with, but I am also a person whose mood generally dictates what music I want to hear. And not all bands are worth bothering over, as Cody mentioned. So there you have it.

but most of the stuff i listen to lately is characterized as "death metal", so i guess ill have to go with that

Very true. I guess genres have that function that it's easier to describe certain type of metal to someone if nothing else, for me it's just metal. Some heavier, some not so much. But if we go to that area of wankery, I'm pretty much the same with progmetal. There is no wrong moment for it. And certain mood is also factor for me when it comes to certain type of metal, and actually thrash comes very close second after prog (there's some Evile fanboy in me).

I chose other. I prefer the goofy antics of Dev and Psychotstick and the strange po' ass innovation of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum to anything else.

Prog goes too Dream Theater / Shug shug at times and the other genres I only have moderate interest in.
