Dug into the revamped Death Rally this weekend. I'm not sure how I feel about it. Looks and playability are fine, but the difficulty isn't really showing along with real differences between the cars. Beginner or Hard races don't really seem that different, and where the old game had a competition where you needed to score points each race to reach the top to get a chance to beat the game, that aspect seems to be thrown completely overboard so it just seems like you're doing random races to score 'Fame' (which does nothing) and get money for upgrades (like the old game). Because of this it's totally unclear what goal you're working towards and what may be the best course of action to get there are fast/best as possible. Another thing I don't like is that each race is only 3 laps; you're done before you're well and good into the race. A customisable setting, or number of laps simply related to difficulty (as was the case in the old game) would've been nice.

The improved arsenal of weapons is nice, but ultimately you're just pouring all your points into the rocket launcher and all the others ones will be useless. The fact they tried to implement an actual story into the game is laughable (supposedly each story update is driven by your 'Fame' stat, although I never found any hard evidence for that). Racing strategies I used in the old game can still work here, and very nicely in the right conditions which can be a lot of fun. There are no penalties for losing, however, so the game for me has lost some of the charm and challenge the old one provided. It's easy to try a suicidal strategy, because it doesn't matter; the old game would penalise you by not giving you any money (including bonuses you earned in the race) and the competition would advance in points, putting you further back in the standings. Such a mechanic makes you think about your approach; this game doesn't challenge that.

Overall, the fun factor is still there because the mayhem in each race is quite addictive, but if you look beyond single races I definitely prefer the structure of the old game over this one. I suppose the multiplayer might be fun, but I haven't tried that yet. Maybe when I decide to buy the official version.

I doubt anyone cares about this game other than me, but there you go. :P

I have a confession to make.
I did play the first game until the very first cemetery shooting frenzy point.
I HAVE NO IDEA HOW I COULDN'T GET PASS IT.
The thugs just shot me down, again and again.
I had no chance of surviving, so in great desperation I threw the game as far as pepper grows.
Haven't even thought about playing it since.
But now I think you can get it for few euros, maybe I should go ahead and reclaim it and own the bad guys.

Mike Patton is awesome in both.
Though thinking about him makes me quesy, he did poop in a shoe.

Well I loved the original - that's a valuable bit of information you provided there. It's quite cheap on steam, and I can imagine how cheap it will be on nearest sale :>

^ Once it's below 5 euros it may be worth a purchase. :)

In other news, I started Skyrim. Probably a good thing I have next week off work.

not quite sure how much sense it makes to release this game on current-gen consoles! :P

That looks gorgeous, to put it mildly.

To be honest though, I couldn't help but be disappointed that all those stunning visuals will be put to work on yet another shooter.

I do believe that the Crysis games are just showcases for the Crytek engine. So although the new Crysis game may turn out a (stunningly good-looking) average shooter, other games using the same engine can look just as good, and be fun to play as well. Featuring more toads and whatnot.

I bought and started it too. Weeks ago, I'm five hours in or so. Methinks I just don't get along well with run of the mill fantasy stuff.

First Crysis game is not one, but two metric fucktons of fun. Advanced tech helps here a lot, without it everything wouldn't be such big and explodey. Even second one's damn decent, despite being smaller and less explodey. But yeah, it would be even cooler if the tech was used for something beyond typical Michael Bay shooter.

X-com Enemy Unknown's out in october. Now that's grand. I wonder if I still like strategies, wasted tons of time on original X-com and TFTD.

Been away from video games for three months, so getting reacquainted. Diablo III and Skyrim out the wazoo. Although I have discovered I have video game ADD; I'll sit and start playing a game and after about an hour I have to switch and play something else. Weird...
