There Will Be Blood

Entertaining story about the start of the California oil industry. Also intriguing to watch a man spiral that far down. At the end me and my friend looked at each other and simultaneously exclaimed "How the fuck is that the ending!?", so yeah it's pretty good. :D

well, it is officially October here in Germany (no this is not going to be an Oktoberfest comment) so it's time for that good old Halloween movie marathon tradition!

And my first movie was:

Image

and WTF is all I can say. This is supposed to be an 'Alien' rip-off. Well, I can definitely see the similarities but this movie is just sooooooo much more cheesy, weird, silly and bad. I'd even say it's one of those 'so bad it's good cases'. The story is as simple as it can be. A crew lands on an alien planet and shit hits the fan. There's shitty looking aliens, cheesy special effects and costumes and yes...there is indeed a scene where a mutated Alien worm rapes a naked chick which looks about as weird as it sounds. Oh and Robert Englund is in it and Sid Haig too.

There's something odd I noticed though. This movie is from 1981 and quite a few scenes, as cheesy as they were, very much reminded me of more modern sci-fi horror flicks such as Event Horizon and Prometheus. So that was kind of cute to see. Anyways, if you like trash then this might be one for you as it can hardly get a lot more trashy than Galaxy of Terror.

Not sure if either of you guys have seen it, but Hardware would be a good choice for a horror fest. It owes quite a bit to Alien and The Terminator, but by it's own merits and aesthetics it's an enjoyable cult film.

Watched the Adam West Batman at the cinema last night, which also had a costume contest and audience participation. It was fun having everyone shout select lines and stuff like BAP, THWACK, PO-OOW during the fight scenes. A lot of kids dressed as Batman (of course) and the hosts were perfect mock ups of Adam West and Burt Ward.
The person who won the contest though dressed as Harley Quinn; she had the look and voice down pat.

Hardware might make it into my 'playlist', so to speak. We shall see. And I just recently bought that Batman movie on Blu-ray, hehe.

And welcome back, Sean!

Thank you sir! Thanks for reminding me to come back, haha. So, here goes, numero uno (copy and pasted from blog)...

The Frighteners (10/1)

Here we go-- first horror flick of the month!

Today I watched Peter Jackson's The Frighteners. Before I get into the review, shameful admission: I have never seen any of Jackson's horror films. You would think on my third year of doing this I would have watched one by now, but ya know... you'd be wrong. This isn't one of the ones I hear about most either when people talk about his pre-Lord of the Rings horror, but I saw it on Netflix and thought I'd check it out.

The Frighteners is a sort of horror/comedy that tells the story of a down-and-out psychic investigator (Michael J. Fox) that discovers that Death is killing off people in his town. This is told against the backdrop of another story of a orderly who killed 12 people as at a sanitarium. The movie is intentionally over the top and heavy handed, from the story to the characters to the music (Danny Elfman). And while I "get it" it was just a bit too much sometimes. It gave the movie a feeling of not being able to know what it was in parts--is it a serial killer movie? Is it a supernatural haunting flick? Once again, I'm sure that was Jackson's intention, but as a viewer it was hard at points to grab on to some solid grasp of what the movie was. All in all though, I did enjoy it, and it had some great laugh out loud parts such as when the main female characters' very dumb husband begins beating a "possessed" Raggedy Anne doll with a pillow. Jackson then continues in the next scene to poke fun at the idiocy of characters in much of horror, with the same husband commenting as kitchen items fly around the house that "there must be some form of reasonable explanation." There my idiot theory goes again. Also, '90s animation... gotta love it.

I am, however, very disappointed someone in the course of the movie didn't call Michael J. Fox chicken and he responding with "Nobody calls me chicken." Lost opportunity, Mr. Jackson.

A flawed but fun flick that I don't see myself probably ever revisiting.

6.5/10

you should definitely watch Braindead. It may not be on Netflix though. Dunno, maybe get it from Blockbuster? But it's certainly worth it. If you dig fun splatter movies.

That one is definitely on my list. I usually just find ones I don't own/aren't on Netflix and find them streaming online. Totally legally, of course... :D

Day 2
may I start with a review quote that is on the box of the movie that I watched today....

"For God's sake! This movie actually exists? I thought that was just another South Park creation..."

Yes, I watched The Human Centipede. I have to admit that I laughed pretty much throughout the entire movie. What does that say about me? I don't know. But I thought it was funny as hell, maybe not intentionally, but it was hilarious. Maybe it's because I saw that South Park episode HumanCentiPad first. I don't know. But it was fucking entertaining. Sure, it's a pretty shitty movie (no pun intended). But aren't those more often than not the most entertaining ones? Next time I invite a bunch of friends over to my place I might have to watch this one with 'em. Great party flick.

Prometheus was a pretty cool flick. Visually pleasing, of course, being a Riddley Scott movie. The themes and ideas were insanely cool, and that is kind of why, when the main characters started talking about
Spoiler: show
how she can't have a baby
, I couldn't help but sarcastically think "Oh, right, almost forgot that a movie can't possibly keep our interest without human drama and conflict! No way fucking god-like aliens and discovering their secrets would be fascinating enough to fill 2 hours!". But fuck it, I liked it anyway. I was just left wondering how awesome it would be to see a movie this beautifully made (and budgetarily unrestrained) that could focus its whole running time on exploring these cool things without having to stop every 15 minutes to show us people screaming and running and arguing and so and so.
There are huge groups on Facebook about how cool science is, I think there is now an audience for a film like that.

Oh, and "young Magneto" and "Stringer Bell" were fucking cool!

Btw, shouldn't there be a general movie-discussion thread? I want to express how amazing that Cumberbatch fella sounds as Smaug in the new Hobbit-trailer!

Supposedly in the original script the scene where they wake up the engineer goes a little different. They have a conversation. Now how damn cool would that have been? Instead this super intelligent alien just roars and attacks them mindlessly like an animal.
