It is a shame the cheapness of places like Futureshop for CDs has driven the independent recordshop out of Canada because that leaves room for horrible over-priced places like HMV left. ORDER YOUR CDs FROM THE LABELS! I am surprised you found those HevyDevy albums there. I used to visit HMV every Friday while living in Western Canada, never bought a CD, and not once did I ever see any SYL or Devin Townsend albums. The selection of heavy music is horrible and no one on staff knows shit about music.

I hear ya. Rumor has it in the stores we have over here, they actually hire on appearance...
Of course, the truth behind that rumor, if any, is pretty much irrelevant; if you take a peek at who's behind the counter you'd be wondering the same thing. I don't know what it's like in other countries, if it differs much at all, but all the sales people seem to be tall, blonde and metro looking. My guess is they get hired because there's a high chance they'll be up to date with the latest in pop music, chart hits etc...which is where stores like HMV make all their money.

Here's what happened to me the other week.

In one of those stores I bought a CD (they had a sale so I thought I'd use up that credit I mentioned earlier) and apparently some of the teeth in he tray had broken, so the CD wouldn't stay put. So the guy behind the counter takes out the tray, looks through some drawers and put in a new tray. Only problem was, a transparent tray came out and he replaced it with an opaque white one, hiding the artwork underneath.

Travesty!! Luckily I have dozens of empty/broken jewel cases laying about so I replaced it with a transparent one myself. But I should have kicked the ass' ass of course.

Really? I wonder about what music though, you can't expect everyone to know much about every genre, and put it this way, I'm a music major and I don't know shit about pop except:

1. It's "catchy"
2. The artists (at least pop artists of today) barely ever write their own music
3. Auto-tune.

Yet I could drone on about rock and metal, sub-genres of rock and metal, roots of rock and metal....and a heap of music theory crap that no one wants to hear

Parents are the ones who buy their kids' clothes. It's up to them whether or not they buy them the thongs..pop stars don't shove them down their throats. Any parent that lets a kid that young listen to Lady Gaga needs some better parenting skills.

I saw Lady Gaga last month on tour and it was one of the best concerts I've ever been to.

Well a few years back we had some goth/punk/alternative looking people working at the HMV mega store, now they mostly look like emos/indies are what have yous...
I wouldnt be surprised at all to find out they hired based on appearances.

Sure was. I'll probably do what I did with Ki and Addicted. Order Ghost through Devy and get Decon at the local independent shop Peltirumpu. The dude there is totally awesome and needs support. Should stop by this week and get something new.
