It is very linear yeah - more so than any other I have played, but the battle system is actually pretty good (a complaint I had about FFXII - hated the battle system) and although I have a few niggles about some of the voice acting, it's gorgeous so far. Graphically incredible. I cried, it's so beautiful.

I'll have nightmares because of all this Disney cheese!

actually it doesn't have anything to do with not being ever able to do it. It's just that it takes quite a bit of time to learn the levels properly to get through them well and then you got to get through all 4 in a row too. And well, I got other things to do now and then too and this is a case where you can't just stop and save your progress.

Apparently you finish huge games over the course of a few days if I read some of your posts correctly. This'll be a good change for you. :P

The last game I played that posed me with a "no saves" option was the original Grand Theft Auto. It's a non-feature that adds quite a bit of challenge. :D

meh...yeah I guess I'll try anyways, heh :D But not because of Mulan!!! :P

tomorrow's the 9th so it would be cool to hear from some of you guys if FF XIII is worth getting. The reviews it gets aren't necessarily charming, considering that it's a FF game.

and thanks, keeptheflame, for your opinion on it. Hmm, I did hear it's graphically impressive. But I also heard there's no sidequests, you can't really revisit places, there's basically no open world at all. I'm not quite sure if they left out a bit too much this time.

The gametrailers one actually sold me on the game.

And it's okay, not every FF has to have an open world.

Yes, as far as I have seen.

Yep, though again it's only a case of 'as far as I know'

Yeah...I mean, I'm a huge FF fan - but what pleases me is not/may very well not be what pleases you when it comes to games. I love cinematic stuff, so Metal Gear Solid 4 was awesome for me. Like playing a big 'ol movie. And while FFXIII feels a bit like running from point A to point B to get to a cutscene/bossfight/party (and story) change -- that suits me fine, so long as the battle system works for me and the story is engaging enough for me to want to know more. Final Fantasy VII was fantastic in the freedom it gave you to roam about on the 'world' - but not exactly graphics-intensive...part of me wonders if perhaps the ability to create a free-roaming 'world' is sacrificed in order for it to have the amazing graphics it does? I know NOTHING about game design but I know they had to cut a lot of data (15GB??) for the 360 version. :/

Sounds like if you're gonna get FF13 PS3 is the way to go.

It definitely seems like the superior sku. I don't have the luxury, so I'll make due. S'ok, from what I've seen the differences are going to be negligible on my 1080i TV

yeah, I guess you're right. I shouldn't judge the game based on what they left out of it. I do love games with a cool cinematic style. MGS4 was amazing, as you mentioned. And a lot of people were not happy with what Bioware left out of ME2 while it didn't bother me at all.

Anyways, I'll still wait till I hear a few more opinions and will then decide...

Well, considering I had so much fun with Fallout 3, I have a feeling New Vegas will be a lot of fun. Considering it was made by a team of people that worked on the original Fallout games...I'm definitely interested.

FF 13 is interesting so far.

The designs, for once, are all really cool, none of the characters look like total dorks. Now, the characterization is very JRPG, but not in the effeminate man-boy way, so that's not a problem for me at all.

The pre-rendered vistas are so cool, and beautiful, and varied so far.

What bothers me, is that they just kinda throw you in the thick of things story-wise without explaining anything. Like they give you vignettes about why you should care, but I'm not sure that was the best choice.

It drags for a second, and then all of a sudden you get magic, and then the gameplay fucking rules.

It's kind of hard to explain, but it just works so smoothly. Right now (and I'm still super enthralled with it), it's the best turn-based RPG I've played so far.

I love how you level up. It's so damn cool.

It's like the gameplay mechanics took the best bits from FF 12, FF 10, FF X-2, and maybe even a bit of the Last Remnant and a lil tiny tiny bit of Xenogears. If that makes any sense.

It just works so well.

You start to gain context, and then all of a sudden, a majority of the characters in a Final Fantasy are likable. Holy crap.

Now, Square doesn't have anything on the dialogue of Bioware, but the full composition is beautiful.

Certainly and easily the best Final Fantasy since 9. Now here's to hoping there's none of those muppet baby-esque curves that were thrown by FF8 (which was a much worse game anyway)
